From Sharia law to Women's rights. How have women managed to fight back in the heart of a bitterly theocratic state? Who are these women? What are their stories? Women on the Front Line tries to answer these questions by talking to women’s rights activists who have been in the thick of struggle for gender equality in Iran. The film, the first of its kind, is the brainchild of Sheema Kalbasi, the Iranian poet and human rights activist. Written by Sheema Kalbasi and Hossein Fazeli and directed by Hossein Fazeli, the film combines on-camera interviews with theatrical segments to arrive at a subjective take on the struggle of women’s rights activists in Iran.

This event occurred on September 26th, 2005 Berkley Center for Religion, Peace and World Affairs Georgetown University http://berkleycenter.georgetown.edu Ayaan Hirsi Ali, Dutch MP, and author of the controversial film Submission, addressed the Georgetown community on the challenges facing Muslim women in Europe. Hirsi Ali, a Member of the Dutch Parliament, is outspoken on issues such as the role of women, immigration, development, and democracy. In her talk, Hirsi Ali combined political and policy analysis with personal anecdote. She related how she avoided an arranged marriage by deplaning in Germany when her Canada-bound airplane stopped to pick up more passengers. From Germany, she took a train to Holland where she set down roots, became educated, and emerged as a figurehead for human rights issues. Today the Netherlands and all of Europe face unprecedented challenges stemming from the growth of cultural and religious pluralism in largely secular societies. The event was co-sponsored by the Berkley Center and BMW Center for German and European Studies. Ayaan Hirsi Ali is a resident fellow at the American Enterprise Institute and a former Member of Parliament from the Netherlands, as well as a prominent critic of Islam and advocate for its reform. She is outspoken on issues such as the role of women, immigration, development, and democracy. She is author of the controversial film "Submission," directed by Theo Van Gogh, as well as the books Nomad (2010), Infidel (2007), and The Caged Virgin (2006), a collection of essays. Born in Somalia, she fled an arranged marriage and sought political asylum in the Netherlands, where she earned a political science degree and served in parliament for three years. Ali also worked as a researcher for the Wiardi Beckman Foundation and as an interpreter and adviser for the Office of Intercultural Communication in Leiden. She is now a permanent resident of the United States.

Quote from the original Press release: This is the first time that a (critical) film about the circumcision of boys has been made in the Netherlands, and this broadcast led to a strong public debate. On Friday, 17 December 2004, the Minister decided to exclude the circumcision of boys from the Dutch National Health insurance scheme. 90% of the circumcisions were carried out for religious, rather than health reasons. >>> MOEDER, WAAROM BEN IK BESNEDEN? Zelfs de mildste vorm van vrouwenbesnijdenis wordt als een vorm van genitale verminking gezien; een barbaars ritueel. Maar jongensbesnijdenis, de oudste chirurgische ingreep ter wereld, daar praten we niet over. Althans, dat zou je denken... Meer informatie: http://www.vpro.nl/programma/geluk/afleveringen/22634573/
