THE BAKER ! Largest river in Chile in terms of Volume of Water. located in the Aysén del General Carlos Ibáñez del Campo Region of the Chilean Patagonia. It runs along the east side of the Northern Patagonian Ice Field and empties into the Pacific Ocean, near the town of Caleta Tortel. The river forms a delta, dividing into two major arms, of which only the northernmost one is navigable. THE BAKER is in serious danger ! DANGER !! DANGER !!! I feel so fortunate to be able to navigate this waters and I really hope you get to do it too ... In summer 2010, photographer James ‘Q’ Martin and conservation biologist Chris Kassar started an organization called Rios Libres. The organization uses multi-media to join the fight to protect the wild lands of Patagonia from proposed dams that threaten two of the most pristine rivers in one of the world’s most spectacular regions. Last April, Q traveled south once again and landed in the thick of some of the largest anti-dam protests the country has ever seen. He captured historic footage of the protests, then spent nine weeks traveling the length of the country talking to gauchos, scientists, activists and the public in search of answers. The result is a solution-based film that addresses the hard questions that remained unanswered in Rios Libres’s first film: “What does an alternative energy model look like?” “How do the Chileans feel about it?” and “Could Chile become a global leader by gaining energy independence via green technology?”

Patagonia clothing company asked me to make a slide show of my Sin Represas exhibit images for the video section of their catalog site. Instead I decided to make this video about my experience of following the story of the proposed dams on the Baker and Pascua Rivers in Patagonia. I made an english version (find it here also) and this is the spanish version narrated also by me. (forgive my lousy spanish and my Chilean accent!) For more information about the mega-dam proposal please visit Patagonia Sin Represas, NRDC or Conservacion Patagonica.

Directed by: Sarah Athanas Produced by: Robert Jackson and Sarah Athanas Chile, USA & Argentina 2010, 53 minutes Tracking Patagonia is a vivid portrait of life in Chile’s wild south as it faces the potential construction of five hydroelectric dams. Filmed by a young American film crew traveling by bicycle and raft and told exclusively through the voices of the people, the documentary explores the relationship between the people and the landscape, concluding that the very essence of Patagonia depends upon the freedom of its rivers.
