The Great British Food Cycle is a nationwide campaign aimed at getting people back in touch with the great British food that’s on their doorsteps. Led by eccentric foodie Tim Keates, tweed-clad and moustachioed, who picks up & drops off delectable samples of Great British food to Great British people as he pedals on his merry way through these islands. Organic butchers, artisan bakers and box scheme makers – and the people who enjoy their great local food – are all invited to get involved. As more and more people are asking about the providance of their food, and how they can get the most flavour & nutrition for themselves and their families we are turning a spotlight on great local farmers, growers, retailers & chefs the length of the country.

            • How we work

from Jan Kattein Architects / Added

www.jankattein.com Jan Kattein Architects is an award-winning practice based in Islington, London. We specialise in housing, urban design, town center regeneration and theatre design. Our clients include private individuals, developers, housing associations, local authorities, charities and opera houses. We understand architecture as an interdependent process which emerges from the collaborative exchange between designers, makers and users. Shaping this dialogue is an important part of our work and helps us to deliver projects that are specific, functional, enjoyable and sometimes entertaining. The city is a politically tangled territory. Many of our projects are in the public realm, they involve neighbours, building owners, customers, constituents, residents, stakeholders, vendors, officers and religious groups. During the last year JKA have worked closely with some 300 – 400 people that were directly affected by our work. We know that the success of our projects depends on an understanding of the aspirations and concerns of every single person that we work with. Sustainability is a major concern for us. We reject the notion of a fixed design-life-expectancy common in contemporary construction. Timeless architecture has the ability to take account of its fluctuant context, accommodating cultural, political, economic and environmental changes and the cyclical nature of day-time and night-time activities. Considering whole-life performance during the design process makes our buildings adaptable, upgradeable and repairable. Technology enables us to work collaboratively with other design team members, maintain a dialogue with large stakeholder communities and control digital manufacturing from our desktop. In reality most projects are a hybrid of digital and analogue working methods. A telephone conversation, a hand sketch or a physical massing model can be equally useful to advance the project. JKA is a delivery-focussed practice. We are just as concerned as our clients about the realisation of a carefully designed and technically adept project on time and on budget. An established working relationship with some of London’s most innovative engineers, designers, artists, researchers and craftsmen means that ad-hoc skills exchange, formal collaborations or outsourcing of specialist work items contribute to the successful delivery of complex project briefs.
