Optic Nerve (1985) 16mm, Color/Sound composition by Helen Thorington. Available at www.barbarahammer.com Optic Nerve is a powerful personal reflection on aging and family. "Hammer employs film footage which through optical printing and manipulation is layered to create a compelling meditation on her visit to her grandmother in a nursing home. Movie made for Ann Arbor Film Festival for the Fairy Door ( a miniature movie screen 5x7") I created the movie as something the fairies would have made and watched, but also to honor people who have played big roles in the festival's success over the years. I think of the fairies as playful, magical and a little devious, thus the "mind reading."

Place is mutable, contestable, leaky and marked with the trauma of the past. As we become unstuck and flow into one another we may find a way to create alternate possibilities, a different pathway thinking about the ethical self. ---Barbara Hammer
