This is my Barcode Andy Warhol portrait made with 2,160 barcodes. I used the UPC barcodes from Campbell’s Soup cans that were part of Warhol’s iconic screenprints. I even curved the barcodes to mimic the cylindrical shape of soup cans. I also created an augmented reality interface to go along with the portrait, so when a barcode is scanned, a video projector lights up the corresponding soup can and dumps virtual soup into a bowl. I added a simple game which is activated by scanning the barcodes in sequence from Tomato all the way around to Clam Chowder. The mosaic includes several hidden "Easter Egg" barcodes. For instance, one plays a special clip of Warhol eating a hamburger and another shows David Bowie playing Warhol in the movie Basquiat. Bar code artist Scott Blake puts the ubiquitous signs of consumerism together to create images of the famous and infamous, and he said people often perceive his work as critical of his subjects. "I think I'm really fascinated with people I portray," Blake told KETV NewsWatch 7. Blake has traveled around the country with his project. His portraits of Andy Warhol, Bruce Lee, Oprah Winfrey, Elvis Presley and Warren Buffett and other celebrities come with a hand scanner. Images: Scott Blake-Barcode Artist When bar codes on each portrait are scanned, "a whole light table of activity is going on," Blake said. Scanning Buffett's face prompts an interactive display of Berkshire Hathaway products, like a pouring Coca-Cola can. Scanning Warhol's face dumps a 3-D can of the iconic Campbell's soup into a bowl. Scanning Lee's face prompts a virtual fight from one of Lee's movies. "It's 3-D. You can taste it, smell it and scan it," Blake said. "It's not digital art; it's more like a marathon of art projects." The Buffett piece was actually commissioned for the Berkshire Hathaway weekend. Blake showed it to shareholders. Blake's work is also featured in a Ripley's Believe It Or Not book titled "Seeing Is Believing." Blake hopes to personally show Buffett his work. "It would be real cool to see Warren scan his own bar codes. I think he'd love it. It's very true to who and what he is," Blake said. With his scan-able barcode collages, Scott Blake's interest in portraying popular icons has twisted towards a full-on commentary of our immersion in commodity culture. In this barcode portrait installation, a simple sweep of the scanner invokes fight scenes from all of Bruce Lee movies. As the video excerpts appear, Blake asks us to question our own conscious connection to Bruce Lee. After all, our recognition of Lee is not based on his static portrait. Rather, the videos resulting from each barcode scan highlight the aestheticized, choreographed violence for which this martial artist is famous. Blake's collages leave us wondering whether pop artists are masters of market or leaders inspired to draw new lines for aesthetic appeal.

"Barcode Cornel West" is a digital mosaic made with 2,521 ISBN barcodes from books written by Dr. Cornel West. I created the original 8 x 8 feet digital mosaic on a computer using Photoshop. The barcodes can be scanned with a smartphone and it will show more information about the product. On the flip side I cataloged a selection of the barcodes used for the portrait. This 50 page flipbook is printed on 32 pound paper with screw post binding, which is one of the most archival book binding methods available. All of my flipbooks are signed and dated. http://www.barcodeart.com/Barcode_Cornel_West.html

                      What are Tags?

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
