Recorded at a Savile Club Aperitif Concert 2 April 2015 Six Bulgarian Dances Béla Bartók (1881-1945) 1. 9/8 :: 2. 7/8 :: 3. 5/8 :: 4. 8/8 :: 5. 9/8 :: 6. 8/8 These Dances form the final part of Bartók’s teaching method Mikrokosmos. An ardent folksong collector, Bartók traveled all over Transylvania with a manuscript book and one of the earliest portable wax-cylinder recorders. Bulgarian folk music is unique to this day, in its fearless use of irregular metre. Written in the 1930s for the indefatigable British champion of modern music, Harriet Cohen, Bartók vehemently opposed fascism, banning his music in occupied Europe and finally seeking exile in the US, where he died in obscurity.
