Foot Warts - Podiatrist in Lakeland and Bartow, FL - Gabriel Delgado, DPM http://midflafootandankle.com Phone (863) 686-1641 Podiatrist Dr. Gabriel F Delgado of Mid Florida Foot & Ankle Clinic discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Foot Warts (Plantar Warts). Plantar Wart A plantar wart is a skin lesion on the sole of the foot that is caused by a virus. A plantar wart is often mistaken for a corn or callous because it has a similar appearance, usually a circular area of thick skin that creates discomfort with weight-bearing. The classic sign of a wart is the appearance of tiny “black dots” within the lesion. Warts can occur on any area of skin, including around toenails, but they tend to occur on the sole of the foot because this area is the most susceptible to micro-trauma which creates an entry point for the wart virus. Warts seem to be more prevalent in children and young adults; one theory is that adults have had more time to develop immunity to the wart virus. Vein Care - Podiatrist in Lakeland and Bartow, FL - Gabriel Delgado, DPM http://midflafootandankle.com Phone (863) 686-1641 Podiatrist Dr. Gabriel F Delgado of Mid Florida Foot & Ankle Clinic discusses Vein Care. Ambulatory Phlebectomy Ambulatory phlebectomy is an outpatient procedure developed by dermatologic surgeons that removes superficial veins through small, slit-like incisions in the skin. Why choose ambulatory phlebectomy for varicose veins? Ambulatory phlebectomy is a good choice for treating both asymptomatic and symptomatic superficial veins from the skin. It is usually performed on larger veins that bulge above the surface of the skin and varicose veins. It also rarely is used on smaller veins. Ambulatory phlebectomy may be combined with other therapies in the treatment of venous disease. The procedure is not recommended for patients unable to walk on their own or wear compression stockings. What you should know about ambulatory phlebectomy for varicose veins: • The procedure is performed under local anesthesia and patients should not feel any pain during treatment. • The procedure involves four steps: The veins to be treated are outlined or marked, local anesthesia is injected into the skin, bulging veins are surgically removed, segment by segment, through small incisions, and graduated compression stockings are worn for a week or more after surgery. Possible risks, as with any treatment there are risks associated, though they are minimized in the hands of a qualified physician, include: • Temporary bruising and swelling. • Inflammation caused by small segments of vein that remain in the skin. • Skin numbness caused by injury to adjoining sensory nerves. • Allergic reaction to local anesthesia. Ingrown Toenail http://midflafootandankle.com/surgical-non-surgical/ingrown-toenails An ingrown toenail occurs when the edge of the nail, usually on the big toe, grows into the skin adjacent to it. This causes pain, and if left untreated may result in infection. Signs of an infection include redness, swelling, and discharge at the edge of the toenail. Inflammation may increase to the point where the skin at the edge of the toenail swells over the side of the nail. Risk factors for an ingrown toenail include: • Abnormal bone anatomy or position of the big toe • Abnormal bone growth beneath the nail • Poor-fitting shoes — too tight at the toes or too loose • Trauma to toe Please call to schedule an appointment (863) 686-1641 Visit our website: http://midflafootandankle.com

Heel Pain - Podiatrist in Lakeland and Bartow, FL - Gabriel Delgado, DPM http://midflafootandankle.com Phone (863) 686-1641 Podiatrist Dr. Gabriel F Delgado of Mid Florida Foot & Ankle Clinic discusses the symptoms, causes and treatments for Heel Pain. HEEL SPUR- (PLANTAR FASCIITIS) http://midflafootandankle.com/surgical-non-surgical/heel-pain A heel spur is a calcium deposit on the underside of the heel bone. On an X-ray, a heel spur protrusion can extend forward by as much as a half-inch. Heel spurs occur when calcium deposits build up on the underside of the heel bone, a process that usually occurs over a period of many months. Heel spurs are often caused by strains on foot muscles and ligaments, stretching of the plantar fascia, and repeated tearing of the membrane that covers the heel bone. Heel spurs are especially common among athletes whose activities include large amounts of running and jumping. Risk factors for heel spurs include: • Walking gait abnormalities, which may place excessive stress on the heel bone, ligaments, and nerves near the heel • Running or jogging, especially on hard surfaces • Poorly fitted or badly worn shoes, especially those lacking appropriate arch support • Excess weight Other risk factors associated with plantar fasciitis include: • Increasing age, which decreases plantar fascia flexibility and thins the heel’s protective fat pad • Diabetes • Spending most of the day on one’s feet • Frequent short bursts of physical activity • Having either flat feet or high arches Symptoms of Heel Spurs Heel spurs often cause no symptoms. But heel spurs can be associated with intermittent or chronic pain — especially while walking, jogging, or running — if inflammation develops at the point of the spur formation. In general, the cause of the pain is not the heel spur itself but the soft-tissue injury associated with it. Many people describe the pain of heel spurs and plantar fasciitis as a knife or pin sticking into the bottom of their feet when they first stand up in the morning — a pain that later turns into a dull ache. They often complain that the sharp pain returns after they stand up after sitting for a prolonged period of time. Also known as heel spur syndrome, the condition is often successfully treated with conservative measures, such as the use of anti-inflammatory medications, ice packs, stretching exercises, orthotic devices, and physical therapy. In this condition, the toe is bent at the middle joint, causing it to resemble a hammer. Left untreated, hammertoes can become inflexible and require surgery. People with hammertoe may have corns or calluses on the top of the middle joint of the toe or on the tip of the toe. They may also feel pain in their toes or feet and have difficulty finding comfortable shoes. Causes of hammertoes include: • improperly fitting shoes • muscle imbalance. Treatment for the condition typically involves wearing shoes with soft, roomy toe boxes and toe exercises to stretch and strengthen the muscles. Commercially available straps, cushions, or non-medicated corn pads may also relieve symptoms. In severe cases, hammertoe surgery may be recommended to correct the deformity.
