Video and text by Viktorija Mickute/Columbia Missourian COLUMBIA — She is the sophomore Homecoming queen and participates in different extra curriculum programs, such as the Advancement Via Individual Determination and the Teenage Outreach Program. She volunteers for the Food Bank for Central and Northeast Missouri and wants to become a teacher. He has a troubled past. He said he doesn’t enjoy school and works part time. He wants to join the Navy and travel to China. Samantha Moss, 16, and Xavier Rolley, 17, have been dating since August 2013. It might be just a couple of months but it’s long enough for them to know that they love each other. They met each other more than two years ago at Rolley’s cousin's house. Rolley messaged Moss on Facebook. It was nothing more than a small chat once in a while, but he had crush on her from the first time he saw her. Summer school at Battle High School that brought them together. Rolley would have gone to Hickman High School if his aunt hadn’t become the principal of the newest school in Columbia. Moss came to Battle after Jefferson Junior High School because the new school is located in her district. Rolley was the first to approach Moss when he saw her in the school’s cafeteria for the first time in several years. They started talking and spent time in a pool in Rolley’s neighborhood after summer school. When they have school, they do homework together. Sometimes they go to the movies or play laser tag and go bowling. They also spend significant time interacting through FaceTime – an application on the iPads that the school provides. “I talk to Xavier a lot. That’s the way to cope with stress,” Moss explained. She said Xavier is more optimistic and takes things less seriously. Both of them said they feel as if likethey are more different than similar. However, Moss says one thing they share in common is that they don’t like depending on other people. “But we rely on each other all time, which is weird, I guess," Moss said. She said she believes that relationships change over time. Adult relationships are different because of financial issues. However, they are sure they found the right person for each other. “When you are in high school, it’s more serious. You’re looking for someone to spend the life with,” Rolley said.

Friday, Aug. 30, 2013 marked a few more firsts for Battle High School's inaugural year. Prior to the first regular Spartans football game of the season, the Spartan Sparklers' had their first public performance. And named sophomore Kadee Dempsey as the first ever team captain. "She's kind of already been out there and it's already been accepted but i wanted to make it official," said Williams to the locker room of dancers before the game. She then pinned a gold CAPT. to Dempsey's uniform as the circle of girls looked on and applauded. "And you wear this every time you wear your uniform so that everybody knows who you are and what you represent—which is not just Kadee Dempsey, not just the Spartan Sparklers—everyone standing in this room." The girls, already dressed in their uniforms, arrived early enough to exchange "Secret Sister Gifts" and apply makeup on together. And although the dressing room was already occupied with other girls preparing for their own performances, everyone managed to squeeze in long enough to apply the right combination of blue and gold eye shadow and a proper lip color to meet the coach's requirements as Rihanna's "Rock Star" and other hits played on the stereo until showtime.
