1. Rare Lightning Storm Over San Jose, CA (8-6-15)

While watching the sunset this evening of August 6, 2015, I notice that altocumulus clouds were suddenly developing and coming in. Usually these clouds signal an unstable airmass aloft. The presence of altocumulus clouds on a warm and humid summer day is commonly followed by thunderstorms later. Sure enough, by early evening, lightning and thunder proceeded! I quickly went out and went up to our church at The Point Church to get a better view. I've never seen such a lightning storm here! It literally felt like the Midwest-type lightning storm. The lightning was unusually frequent at times and the thunder was also crazy! The lightning was mostly cloud-to-cloud, almost like those anvil crawlers. At one point, I saw like a few cloud-to-ground lightning strike very close to me just over the foothills! The thunder that proceeded sounded like loud fireworks going off...it was crazy! I was in my car alone in the parking lot and I honestly felt a bit scared, yet excited lol. You don't know when or where the next bolt will strike. When the lightning slowed a bit, I drove down to around the Eastridge Mall. Bad idea lol. I didn't see much aside from distant lightning towards the east, and not to mention all the parking lot light pollution ugh! So I went back up to the church and I was happy I did...more awesome lightning was seen. I even got the chance to see some of the more rare ground-to-cloud lightning towards the south! At one time, the winds started to gust in from the south... it was most likely a downburst from one of the passing t-storms. Overall, this evening was a crazy evening weather-wise for the Bay Area, especially for us here in the South Bay! It was a crazy experience. Weather scenario: Nearly 1,000 lightning strikes have lightened up the Bay Area skies Thursday night of August 6, 2015! This rogue lightning storm in our region happened during a dry storm that had even prompted a Red Flag Warning for fire danger due to dry lightning strikes, according to the National Weather Service. By Friday, the threat of lightning diminished. The lightning has since then shifted up into the Sierras and Nevada. What was the cause of such rare weather for us? The Bay Area and coastal regions of California saw so many lightning strikes, thanks to a passing low-pressure system. Despite the storms being 'dry', some areas did get some trace amounts of rain. Some drops were pretty large, according to what I observed! The lightning first began about 8 p.m. PDT Thursday along the Big Sur coast and had moved north through Santa Cruz and into the South Bay before heading over to the East Bay close to midnight. There were all kinds of lightning strikes — cloud to ground, cloud to cloud, in-cloud, cloud to air and even ground to cloud! Of the estimated 1,000 lightning strikes between 8 p.m. and midnight, only around 150 of them actually hit the ground. All this lightning and scattered rain showers were caused by a low-pressure storm system interacting with subtropical moisture flowing in from the southwest, along with some moisture being drawn up from distant Hurricane Guillermo near the Hawaiian Islands! Guillermo at the time was downgraded to a tropical storm Thursday (same evening during our freak lightning storm), and had moved north of Hawaii... The islands have escaped a direct hit. Looking ahead, we expected a return to normal summertime weather conditions... Surely, it was one of the best lightning/thunderstorms I've witnessed in my life! (Lightning event occurred Thursday evening, August 6, 2015)

17 years ago Jen and Roly met and let's just say it's a good thing they did. Had they not met, we wouldn't have been able to film one of our favorite weddings ever. When you mix an old school bus, expensive tequila, a mariachi band, and one of the best new wedding venues in the Bay Area with a beautiful couple like Jen and Roly, you can't go wrong. From their incredible first dance to the all night party, it was an event to remember.
