Women constitute more than half of the population. In 2008, 60% of voters were women. It is estimated that 10 million more women than men will vote in this election. Despite this, women make up only 16% of Congress. Women earn only 70 cents to each dollar men make. Women of color and undocumented women make less than white citizens. Mitt Romney and the Republican Party are determined to overturn Roe V. Wade. Romney has not supported equal pay for women (The Lily Ledbetter Fair Pay Act). Romney has vowed to defund Planned Parenthood. Romney has vowed to repeal the Affordable Care Act. Romney doesn't want health care to cover birth control. Romney says same sex marriage should be banned with a Constitutional Amendment. Women, let's rise up. Our vote alone can win this election. A vote for Obama is a vote for your health and your right to choose. It is a vote for equal pay and equal rights. A vote for Obama is a vote for our families. It is a vote to marry who you choose. It's a vote to start a family when you choose. A vote for Obama says that we won't stand for violence against women and that rape is rape. Our vote ensures that our daughters will grow up with the same rights that we've had. A vote for Obama sends a message: This war on women must end. We will not go backwards. This election is shockingly close. Our safety is at stake. Our silence is consent and our vote is our voice. Let’s get active. Let’s get out every vote we can. Let’s make this election a mandate. A mandate to finally ensure women the respect, dignity and equality we all deserve! This is now. This is our call to action. Once and for all, let's take back the power that is so inherently and naturally ours!

The Ladies Choir, led by Becky Stark of Lavender Diamond, charmed and serenaded the audience with 2 songs following our film Become a Microscope-90 Statements on Sister Corita for last night's Flux screenings. This performance is a cover of Yoko Ono's "Sisters O Sisters". Become A Microscope 90 Statements on Sister Corita A Film by Aaron Rose Produced by Jon Barlow, Edited by Lenny Mesina, Original Score by Money Mark and Becky Stark, Animations produced by Alex Dervin, Sound Design by Eddie Kim, Graphic Design by Keith Scharwath, Color by Beau Leon. Synopsis: Sister Corita (1918-1986) was a teacher, political activist and possibly one of the most innovative and unusual pop artists of the 1960’s. She was also a Catholic nun. Become A Microscope is a 20-minute art/documentary film celebrating the life, work, and teachings of this incredible artist. The film was shot on location on the campus of Immaculate Heart in Los Angeles, the same place where most of the film's story happened. It serves as a living, breathing document of the inspiration she spread to so many people throughout her life...and as the title suggests, the importance of looking at the world "small pieces at a time". Through the use of interviews with those who knew her, we tell Corita’s story in an abstract way. Using archival images from the Corita archive along with visual effects created specifically for the project by some of the most talented animators working today, we have created a colorful visual montage. The film reveals itself as a living, moving, graphic and musical artwork.

This Tues March 22nd 8pm! Daughters of the Air: A Spring Equinox Celebration (feat. the Czech "Little Mermaid"!) Cinefamily continues its new tradition of gathering for every solstice and equinox! As we leave behind Old Man Winter and thaw out from his chilly touch, let us rejoice in the reemergence, rebirth, resurrection and rejuvenation that is the spirit of Spring. Join us this night as we toast the turn, turn, turning of the season. The evening starts off with live performances by ASKA, Becky Stark, and British acts Jane Weaver and Emma Tricca! Our feature tonight is Mala Morska Vila, the 1976 Czech version of "The Little Mermaid". The story of the underwater siren who trades her enchanting voice with a witch in return for becoming a human princess has, over the past century, acquired a near-universal legacy -- so it should come as no surprise that, with their strong aflliction to fairy tale heritage, the Eastern Europeans produced the most truly memorable, haunting, and brilliantly unsettling version of all. Following in the pure Czech New Wave tradition of equally fantastical films like Valerie and Her Week of Wonders, Daisies, and Cassandra Cat, Mala Morska Vila is psychedelically anima-infused, with blue-haired mermaids and mermen, vampiristic fish shoals, and icy white-webbed witches -- all sumptuously photographed on exotic ocean locations, along with simulated underwater fantasy worlds created at alien-looking Czech lime quarries. The film’s second-to-none design, costumes and cinematography are also matched by one of the most idiosyncratic and magical undiscovered musical scores in the annals of European cinematic history; composed by the vibrant Zdenek Liska, the soundtrack has all the hallmarks of a Broadcast album some twenty years before the band first committed sound to vinyl. Finders Keepers Records is excited to present Mala Morska Vila for the first time ever in all its subtitled glory! DJs Mahssa, Hymnal and KXLU's Taylor 2000 will keep the vernal vibes perennially budding throughout the night accompanied by flower power movies courtesy of Cinefamily's own Tom Fitzgerald. tickets n' info: http://www.cinefamily.org/calendar/events.html#spring Co-presented by B-Music/Finders Keepers Records
