When I was younger I was a huge Green Bay Packer fan because I idolized Brett Favre. Knowing my obsession with the Packers, my grandfather Pa gave me a book titled “When Pride Still Mattered: Lombardi”, which is a biography on the legendary Packers head coach, Vince Lombardi. With the exception of Abraham Lincoln, he is probably one of the most quoted American icons who is known for his leadership, perseverance and discipline. “Perfection is not attainable, but if we chase perfection we can catch excellence.” - Vince Lombardi Lombardi’s quote has made an impact in my life. Being someone who strives for perfection, failure is tough. Yet, through my experiences I have come to understand that failure is a requirement for perfection. I say this because when we “chase perfection” we must have the self-discipline and purpose to overcome failures, which in the end will allow us to “catch excellence”. In order for this to happen, I believe it starts with perfecting the details.

Saturday’s 12 mile hike up to Bluebird Lake in Estes Park pushed me to my limits. Starting the hike at 8,566 feet with the snow coming down hard, I knew I would be in for a challenge as I had to climb to 11,000 feet where the conditions would be much worse. Fortunately during the first 4 miles of the ascent, the surrounding trees and valleys helped protect me from the elements. However during the last 2 miles, 60 mile an hour winds and knee deep snow (probably should invest in a pair of snowshoes!) had their way with me. Due to the conditions, the trail to the lake was nowhere to be found making me rely on my faulty sense of navigational skills. Further, the footprints I was making that I had hoped would lead me back down the mountain, vanished as soon as the wind and snow hit them. Scared and in way over my head, I kept driving forward knowing my objective was to get to that lake no matter how difficult it may get. I tell you this because in many ways this hike has been very similar to building be-influential. Starting this company, I knew I would face challenges along with being scared and in way over my head. However, whether it is ignorance, stupidity, dogged will or just sheer belief in realizing our vision, the team and I keep moving forward. Each and every day, we all face challenges. Throughout building be-influential, I have come to realize that overcoming these challenges comes down to a matter of perspective. We can either use these challenges as an excuse to feel sorry for ourselves and let them get the best of us or use them to make us stronger. Today I ask that you do the latter and keep the following in mind: Today is the beginning of a journey. Today anything is possible. We will not dwell on the past, nor worry about the future. We will let go of our fears and embrace the unknown. Today we set out to inspire because success is no accident but a representation of our courage to be-influential. ------------------------------------------------------------------ On a side note, I have to give a huge thanks to Arc’teryx and REI. Arc’teryx - I tend to run on hot, especially when I am hiking. Although this is not really an issue in the summer, when winter comes it can make everything pretty miserable. Not knowing how to fix this issue, my buddy recommended that I check out your Venta MX Hoody as he thought it would help regulate my body temps from spiking. With my buddy being an mountaineer, I took his word and bought the jacket. It was a good thing I did because it has been the best clothing investment I have ever made. As mentioned above, I faced some pretty extreme conditions this past Saturday and I could not have been more comfortable in your jacket. When hiking through knee deep snow on steep slopes, I thought I would be dripping with sweat, not the case. Then as I got to more mellow terrain and cooled down a bit, I was worried that the shivers would set in. Again, not the case. Your softshell not only kept my body at a comfortable temperature but it stayed completely dry through 6 hours in the snow. Needless to say I am now a huge fan of your apparel and gear. REI - I can’t tell you how many times I place next day orders and then see them arrive a 3-4 days later. This have never been the case with you. Like all my experiences with your company, you exceed expectations. Without having that Arc’teryx jacket this past weekend, it would have been a pretty miserable hike. Instead it turned into an unbelievable experience that I will never forget, thank you!

“All the adversity I’ve had in my life, all my troubles and obstacles, have strengthened me… You may not realize it when it happens, but a kick in the teeth may be the best thing in the world for you.” - Walt Disney This past Monday I was kicked in the teeth. Like many of you who put in the time and energy towards your dream, sometimes you can push yourself a little too far causing your mind and body to shut down. When this happens I have always had the mentality that I need to suck it up and push through, no excuses. Accomplishing your dreams was not meant to be easy and I never found taking it easy every now and then to be acceptable… until now. My good friend Sarah explains it best (http://generosity30.wordpress.com/2012/10/20/day-6/).

Inspiration Behind This Video As I grow older the luckier I get. The reason? I have come to realize that I was raised by two of the most remarkable people I know, my mom and dad. This past Friday was my mom’s 54th Birthday. For those who haven’t had the privilege of meeting my mom, she is one of the most beautiful (she looks much younger than 54!), loving, caring and supporting mothers one could ask for. I have never shared this with anyone until now but the entire be-influential Beliefs Film Series has been dedicated to my mom from the start. She was the one who inspired me to take this initiative on. Mom – Since day one, you have made our family the number one priority making sacrifices each and every day while never asking for anything in return. You are the most selfless leader I know, as it has never been about you. Always looking out for the best interests of others, you are someone who I aspire to become more like each and every day. Although we may have not seen eye to eye on a couple decisions that I made in the past, you continued to stand by my side. Your support and belief in my future drives me to push myself beyond perceived limitations defying what others said couldn’t be done. I love you mom and I hope you had a great Birthday!

Inspiration Behind This Weeks Video The inspiration behind this week’s video is not attributed to any individual. Instead it was inspired by the need for a call to action. With the presidential election full swing, it is hard not to notice all of the finger pointing taking place. Although I can understand the reasoning behind the motives and strategies being implemented by each party, it is frustrating to watch. The reason being that when thinking of important qualities of a leader, accountability and leading by your actions come to mind. Yet here we are watching two people, one of whom will be leading our country for the next four years, placing most of their focus on exploiting the other candidates weaknesses, to get the upper hand. Yesterday I filmed the sixth video of be-influential Beliefs titled “Three Ways To Lead Gen Y”. Similar to the presidential election, it seems like there is a lot of finger pointing going on between generations. The one I hear the most is that those in Gen Y are self entitled and are only looking out for their best interests. At a time where this country needs people who are accountable and lead by their actions, it seems like many are taking the easy way out. Today, don’t take the easy way out. Stop criticizing, condemning and complaining. Instead recognize the influence we have on others. If we want to see positive change in this country, it starts with us. Set the example and others will follow. “We have the power to make this the best generation of mankind in the history of the world or make it the last.” - John F. Kennedy Upon reading this quote by John F. Kennedy, my grandfather Pa replied with this statement: Ending your message with a John F. Kennedy quotation reminded me of a book he wrote called “Profiles in Courage”. The books is comprised of 10 or 12 chapters, each one telling the story of a politician who said and did the right thing for the benefit of the country at the risk of ending their political careers and some of them paid the price for their courage and honesty by having their political futures either damaged or destroyed. Real courage is rare in politics and most of our current Senate and House representatives are cowards. It can be reasonably concluded that there first priority is to get elected and reelected, there second is Party loyalty and third doing what is right for the citizenry. These people send a lot of our young men and women to war for the benefit of our country and ask these military people to show courage and sacrifice their limbs and lives in the performance of their duties. How sad it is that these representatives who ask others to pay an enormous price for what they do, are unwilling to be courageous enough themselves in order to do what is best for the people they represent, rather than serving their own self interest. Human nature hasn’t changed since Adam and Eve were tossed out of the Garden of Eden so, realistically, we will continue to be represented by people who believe that courage is for other people, not themselves.

Inspiration Behind This Weeks Video Jack Dorsey, Founder of Twitter and Square I consider myself to be a pretty disciplined and driven person. But when learning about the habits of Jack Dorsey, I knew that I needed to step my game up to a whole other level. Alyssa Aldersley, Happiness Hero at Buffer I came across a blog post the other week that Alyssa wrote about Jack Dorsey, which inspired me to film this video about theming. Although I have just started to follow her blog, I am already hooked and looking forward to her upcoming posts. Larry Linne, CEO and President of Sitkins International and Founder of Intellectual Innovations My mentor and someone who implements the idea of theming each day. It’s no wonder why he’s the best at what he does!

Inspiration Behind This Weeks Video Jeffrey Cavignac, My Father and President of Cavignac & Associates I hope to be half the man my dad is when I grow older. One of the greatest leaders I know, he knew that leading by example would make other people elevate their game.An example of this came through my experiences with reading. Knowing that I did not like to read when I was younger, my father never made me do anything I didn’t want to do. Instead he knew that leading by example would make the biggest impact. As mentioned in the video, below I have included questions to assist in helping you find your passion: What are your talents? What activities make you lose track of time? What do you fear? (Sometimes we fear doing things because it is something we truly care about.) What did you love to do when you were younger? Who are people you aspire to be like? What passions are they pursuing? What do you dream about?

                      Tags

Tags are keywords that describe videos. For example, a video of your Hawaiian vacation might be tagged with "Hawaii," "beach," "surfing," and "sunburn."
