    • Roosevelt Institute Class - Is Rome the True Church? - July 29, 2012

      01:12:39

      from Roosevelt Church / Added

The traditional wording of the Apostles' Creed includes the line "the holy catholic (or 'universal') church". Rome essentially claims to be the one true Christian church. But do Scripture and history validate this claim? In this class Vocab and Jason Walsh discuss what this phrase does and does not mean. We will also discuss a very important question about the Roman Catholic Church: is it 'THE' church, 'A' church, or 'NO' church? http://RooseveltChurch.org

      • I Once Believed. Lopker Protest Song

SONG LYRICS: I once believed in the USA, with liberty and justice for all, or at least for most, and that’s pretty close, but the number is starting to fall. I once believed a president, who promised to bring change, He spoke rather well, but from what I can tell, he loves Wall Street more than Main. I once believed a preacher, he told me to tithe ten percent so I gave him eleven, for my ticket to heaven, now I just can’t forget to repent. Now I hold just one thing true I believe in me and you I dream of humanity singing silent harmony I once believed in mermaids, Santa Claus, and the Easter Bunny then I got wise, to all of them lies, except for the tooth fairy’s money. I once believed the chimpanzees on the AM radio waves I listened too long, and I got it all wrong, it aint truth, but ratings they crave. I once believed my cable news was totally balanced and fair, they sounded so certain, but behind the curtain, lies the wizard of doctrinaires. [CHORUS] I once believed God made a mistake in creating all the gay Then I friended some queers, and now hold them dear, and welcome them to the buffet. I once believed a patriot, he was one of the chosen few, who fly the same flag, and proudly brag, that we are better than you. I once believed a general, crossing a crumbling bridge, the gas main was leaking, as he was speaking, of a new enemy coming over the ridge. Now I hold just one thing true I believe in me and you I dream of humanity singing silent harmony I dream of you and me singing silent harmony Copyright John Lopker 2012. All Rights Reserved. Film Abstracts, the Journal of the FilmSoc™ Deux | Une Prière pour la Paix Résumé de ‘Des Hommes et des Dieux’ The critically acclaimed and award winning film ‘Of Gods & Men’ [2010] by Xavier Beauvois, whilst being a sublime achievement in modern cinema, is also a noteworthy contribution to the increasingly critical debate about the role of religious faith in the world today. Based on a true event that occurred in the 90‘s, the film portrays how a mutually beneficial, tranquil and harmonious coexistence between two beliefs was decimated by the emergence of religious fundamentalism. In the essence at least, almost all religions are ways of suppressing our animal instincts, so that all of us could live in peace and harmony with one another, irrespective of the disparities in culture, colour or creed. However when tribalism, an intrinsic trait that we still carry from the primeval stages of humanity, supplants righteousness, a faith becomes nothing more than a weapon of mass destruction, as it has been the case for millennia. Educating ourselves rationally about the history of religious conflict therefore becomes vital, if we are to prevent another world war in the name of faith, and this video is intended to encourage such rational thought.
