        • NYC Prayer 091401

A computer tries to understand human prayer post 9/11 in NYC. Warning, adult language! Shot shortly after 9/11 at one of the many impromptu memorials that sprung up around NYC, I believe this one at a fountain in Central Park. My attempt to come up with my own prayer after the event, knowing as much as I did about what probably would come, since it was pretty clear military action would soon follow and knowing it probably would mean a protracted period of war. As much as I felt for the loss of the people who died, I also knew a lot of other innocent people around the world would probably die soon when a new global war would begin. I tried to imagine what a omniscient computer would pray knowing our entire history as human beings. What would it make of this one specific event? I never screened or showed this to anyone at the time, I felt it was too personal and also felt a bit revolted by the number of artists immediately leaping to "use" the events of 9/11 as raw material. Twelve years later, it seems fine to share now. Made at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art.

A short silent experimental film by Kyle Henry made at the Bemis Center for Contemporary Art (2001, 3m36s). One of several attempts to generate landscape "swatches" assembled from video footage shot from a car at high shutter speed. This one is one long zoom in and out on a Nebraska corn field in motion. A meditation inspired by Buddhist literature and Joseph Campbell's works, in which I was immersed at the time. jcf.org/ Free for non-commercial creative use if citation given.

Opened in March 2013, Carver Bank joins other place-based initiatives launched by Theaster Gates and Rebuild Foundation in Chicago and St. Louis. The 2,600-square-foot Carver Bank facility has been fully renovated and now offers exhibition and performance space, artist studios, Big Mama’s Sandwich Shop, as well as 3,000-square-feet of transformed exterior landscape. The renovation of the Carver Bank building marked the second phase of Gates’s Town Hall project. Carver Bank, at 2416 Lake St., is the site of the first African American-owned bank in Omaha. The project’s goal is for the site to become a space of public participation and cultural adventure, and serve as a hub for the creative and public life of its neighborhood and community. By inviting diverse individuals to work together, Gates proposes to create an urban anomaly that highlights existing gems of knowledge within North Omaha. Managed and programmed by the Bemis Center, Carver Bank hosts regular exhibitions, events and workshops driven by artists and community partners.

The design process, called Building Bridges, will be a collaborative effort that includes neighborhood schools, community leaders, and local businesses. Community involvement is a key component of the project, ensuring the final product reflects the nature of the Council Bluffs area, strengthening the social fabric of the entire community. The Bemis Center for Contemporary Arts, alongside lead artists Therman Statom and Debbie Masuoka, are spearheading the initiative with grant support from the Iowa West Foundation. The newly associated Kanesville-Tinley neighborhood has been chosen as the future site of the large-scale work.
