Berkeley, CA – The City of Berkeley celebrated its first day as an official Tree City, USA today by planting 13 young trees on and around Thousand Oaks Elementary School in North Berkeley. In a joint City and Berkeley Unified School District effort, Thousand Oaks students learned about the critical importance of trees in our environment, as well as proper tree planting techniques from local expert arborists, school district employees and Berkeley Parks Department staff. An enthusiastic crowd of participants and observers cheered as students planted the 2 Trident Maple trees that will now beautify and enliven what had long been an empty corner of the school’s blacktop. The mood was festive as the group moved to the school’s adjacent park to plant 3 Saucer Magnolias and to help Parks staff put in 4 Western Redbuds and 4 Coast Live Oaks into the planting strips along Ensenada and Tacoma Avenues.
