                • The Nuclear Accident Response Organisation 1994 (RNSETT VPU)

from Aleck (Bill) Butcher Added 13 0 0

This was an interesting project - not least because of the title, but this was the first video that I actually edited on a non-linear system. Non-linear editing systems were pretty new in the UK, unless you were doing high-end films with a huge budget. I, as the senior cameraman / editor / director at the unit, had been assessing a number of non-linear systems for a while, ably assisted by my boss (who would have to sign-off on the eventual choice). In the end the filming of this project, about how the Nuclear Accident Response Organisation (NARO) work, needed to cover a lot of activities happening simultaneously and in disparate locations. In addition to that there were some elements that were new to the exercise, as well as some from international partners - including a helicopter rigged to scan for radioactive fallout. As it was an exercise there was a game-plan for the events, so we could be where things were going to happen, but it was mostly uncontrolled action that we had to cover, including the input of the simulated press (SIMPRESS). I was the lead / senior cameraman / director, shooting on a Sony 537 with a Umatic Hi-Band back, with two other cameramen using Sony 537 cameras with Hi-8 backs - so a mixed format problem to start with. The choice of the new editing kit came down to a Media100 system, and the supplier gave me the use of an edit suite for a working week - 5 days to learn, load, first-cut edit and then final edit - plus drive from Portsmouth in Hampshire to Farnham in Surrey and back each day to do it. As it was I had the footage from all the tapes shotlisted before I went up, loaded on the first day, with a story line / rough cut and outline script done by the end of work on day 2. That evening I completed the script, which was then left at base for recording on day 3 by the voiceover artist, Jonathan Copus, whilst I continued with the edit. Day 4 and I laid the V/O down and completed my first-cut, with music and effects, to bring back for comments / changes. Fortunately my first-cut was 95% approved, so my final day was relatively easy - do the changes, check everything over and then run off a couple of master tapes, return to base - job done. A few months later our kit refit happened; Beta-SP backs on the one camera we had, another complete camera, Beta-SP edit record decks and a nice new Media100 edit suite. My boss, and the customer, were very happy with the final product too, which is always the bonus.
