(1 Tes.5:23)

In the Old Testament, God’s first covenant, His people were instructed to bring Him their first fruits and tithes. By bringing both the first harvest and a tenth of the last harvest to the Lord, a rhythm of worship was created in their lives. In the new covenant, the New Testament, rather than a percentage, God’s people were instructed to bring everything of who they were to Him. A battle between idol worship, worshipping the blessings, and worshipping God, the Blessor has always existed. While having money and wealth are not evil, the desire to be rich and the love of money are. Without a correct view of possessions, we can polarize to a poverty or pride mentality. A poverty mentality is driven by fear, hoarding possessions, judging others because of their possessions, and believing blessings are not deserved. Pride wants us to be known, judges people with “lesser” things as being lazy and ignorant, and believes blessings are earned. The “sweet spot” is gratitude and contentment, understanding God knows and provides what we need when we seek Him first. Generosity should be systematic and proportional; given on a regular basis, according to our ability. It can be sacrificial, but does not necessarily need to cause personal affliction. Giving should be intentional and voluntary, meeting genuine needs of our own free will. We should be cheerful givers, motivated by love as Jesus was, ensuring the needs of other believers are met equally, and blessing others so even more blessing will flow from us. Giving to the local church is proactive, “prevention” giving, in advance of a need. Resources are used to provide education, hope and healing, before “rescue giving” is required. Rescue giving provides for immediate need, often involves emotion and has measurable results. In contrast, prevention giving is a faith-motivated discipline.
