Oil was scarce as a result of tough economic constraints, and throughout those years of austerity, bicycles where introduced as an alternative mode of transport. Thousands of Cubans used bicycles on a regular basis, as pedalling became the norm on the island. Years later, the transportation crisis subsided and motorised vehicles returned, and the country’s bicycle culture took a hit. Now, new bikes are difficult to come by and parts are not readily available, yet many Cubans still use bicycles daily and, despite the limited resources, a handful of mechanics provide a service to those who rely on their bikes in their everyday lives. Plenty of cyclists roam the streets of Havana and the rest of Cuba. Ángel, a typical bike riding Habanero, provides a brief insight into Cuban bicycle culture and the importance of bike mechanics in the capital as we come across both riders and repairmen. *Music by VOLT HEIST: www.voltheist.com Read the feature story: http://diegovivanco.es/portfolio-item/havana-bikes-feature-story/

A short visualization of one of the growing ways the "swarming mass" of individual practitioners defines urban space more than any master plan ever could--through shortcuts, meandering diagonals and erasure of line. Also, an excuse to bicycle around town in the middle of the night with a video camera. Both equally good, I think. Brutal honesty welcome.

Beyond the messenger and fixed-gear scenes, contemporary bicycle culture is more fashionable, diverse, and alive than ever before. According to Dustin Nordhus of Berlin’s Cicli Berlinetta, “people who live in a big city are becoming aware that it’s nicer to have a beautiful bicycle than a car.” Gestalten.tv talks to Dustin as well as bike enthusiast Anna Valtonen from Pelago Bicycles, who are featured in Velo–2nd Gear. Along with presenting their stories and their outstanding and unconventional bicycles, the video shares different perspectives on why, according to Standert’s Max von Senger, the bicycle is evolving into “an object of desire for everyone.” Related Book http://shop.gestalten.com/velo-2.html
