Apache Hive (http://hive.apache.org) comes with a lot of built-in UDF, but what happens when you need a “special one”? This post is about how to get started with a custom Hive UDF from compilation to execution in Hue (http://gethue.com), the Hadoop UI, in no time.

Speaker: Alan F. Schatzberg, M.D., Professor, Department of Psychiatry & Behavioral Sciences, Stanford University Prediction of antidepressant response has been a focus of considerable research with emphasis on genetic variation to predict response or side effects. Replication of findings has been lacking such that clinical application is limited. Researchers have argued that major depression is too broad a diagnosis, and response is difficult to discern in placebo-controlled trials, making it less likely to find response predictors. We will present data on an approach in which cognitive measures are combined with genetic markers to develop predictors within a more homogeneous subgroup of patients with major depression. The approach opens avenues for developing better predictors of response and personalized treatment of depression.

The goal of this course is to develop a broad understanding of the principles, methods, and techniques for designing effective visualizations of data. The course will span a wide range of topics, encompassing foundations for both spatial (eg. gridded data from simulations and measurement devices) and nonspatial data (eg. graphs, text, high-dimensional tabular data), as well as the theory behind vision, color, and visualization design. You will gain experience in using cutting-edge data analysis systems, as well as in developing your own interactive visualization tools. Video produced by the SCI Institute and Lexie Floor
