What has the ability to be everywhere, or at many places at once? What can exist simultaneously inside and outside the social mechanisms of urban life? Phantom Couriers: Ghost in the Machine works on several interpretive layers, superimposing beautiful film images, a genuine narrative and a subculture that many feel curious about, but few are able to penetrate. This documentary short film tells the story of Phantom Couriers, Vancouver's longest-running independent courier company. Mark Huggan—owner, dispatcher, storyteller extraordinaire—relates how he started the company, and how he continues to retain both his couriers, and his clients. Bike messengers Brandon, Sarah and Dan describe the fast-paced world of being a courier in Vancouver in this intimate and swift portrait. CREDITS: Written, Produced & Directed: Gregory Gan

This film is based on footage shot in Toronto at the Ice Bike race in 2009 at Dufferin Grove Park. I attempted to capture the winter camaraderie as exemplified by my former profession. This wonderful celebratory event regarding winter cycling did not foresee the tragic 2009 summer death of fellow bicycle courier, Darcy Allan Sheppard, by our former provincial Attorney General, Micheal Bryant. Additional details can be found here, i.e. http://bryantwatch.wordpress.com/2010/08/31/darcy-allan-sheppard-a-lifes-last-moments/ http://bicycling.com/blogs/roadrights/2009/09/16/when-worlds-collide/ Different worlds intersected with horrific consequences. The fundamental spirit of these hard working men and women transcends and remains intact. Technical: This is an original based film work shot at 24fps utilizing Super 8 motion picture cameras and Kodak Vision 2 200T negative transferred to AVI. Edited on a 64 bit Sony Vegas 10c editor transcoded to a high bit rate MPEG4. Conditions were just below freezing. Available light necessitated wide open shooting apertures (f1.8/2.8) in conjunction with a 1 stop push of the negative (200ASA -> 400ASA).

My 2009 b/w super 8 motion picture film "Fixiology" is based on footage shot at the 2008 Cycle Messenger World Championship held in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. This was my initial attempt to mythologize my former profession and hardworking former colleagues partaking in international competition. Event details are still available here, i.e. http://cmwc2008.com/. My original intent was to focus on bicycles and the races specifically, i.e. men and women, muscles and speed. But the magnificent setting dominated by the majestic trees of Ward Island and the nostalgia triggered by so many familiar faces dictated the final edit.
