VIB is a life sciences research institute, based in Flanders, Belgium. They perform basic research with a strong focus on translating scientific results into pharmaceutical, agricultural and industrial applications. For their fifteenth anniversary, we did the entire event branding, for which we used only chalk and a huge blackboard. For this event we also designed a box with nine books in it. For the books only we made more then 200 large chalk drawings. www.coming-soon.be

This video maps out Kurzweil's SIX EPOCHS OF EVOLUTION showing the exponential progression in the way the universe stores and processes information... what we see is a bootstrapping recursive complexification leading us towards some kind of intelligence singularity. Meat/Culture is an animation designed to raise awareness and discussion about cultured meat and its potential benefits in future food development. We love meat, but the way we produce it is currently unsustainable and unethical. However, cultured meat allows us to grow meat directly from animal cells without facilitating death, using fewer resources. As this technology is still developing, the animation is not a technical explanation of cultured meat, but rather an introduction to it and a look at why we might consider it in the face of how we currently produce meat. (Please note the animation contains images that some might find unsavoury) Created with the help of New Harvest, a non-profit research organization advancing alternatives to conventionally produced meat. Official film website: www.thesingularityfilm.com Within the coming decades we’ll have the ability to create computers with greater than human intelligence, bio-engineer our species and redesign matter through nanotechnology, what will it mean to be human? Acclaimed as “a large-scale achievement in its documentation of futurist and counter-futurist ideas” and “the best documentary on the Singularity to date,” THE SINGULARITY is rich with insight, while remaining accessible to mainstream audiences. Some of the world’s leading thinkers, futurists and counter-futurists are interviewed, including Ray Kurzweil, Leon Panetta, Bill McKibben and Richard A. Clarke. THE SINGULARITY is an engaging tool for critical thinking about future technologies.

Incarnated sound sculpture (Xth Sense Biosensing Wearable Technology) Similarly to a mime, I model malleable sonic matter produced by my body. By using the wearable biotech instrument “Xth Sense”, the bioacoustic sound of muscle contractions is amplified, digitally processed, and played back through a surround sound system composed of eight loudspeakers and subwoofers. The natural sound of my muscles and its virtual counterpart blend together into an unstable sonic object. This oscillates between a state of high density and one of violent release. As the listeners imagine the object’s shape by following the gesture, the sonic stimuli induce a perceptual coupling. The listeners see through sound the sculpture which their sight cannot perceive. http://marcodonnarumma.com/works/ominous/

A film by Sputniko! (http://sputniko.com/blog) More info below http://www.sputniko.com/works/sputniko/menstruation-machine 'It’s 2010, so why are humans still menstruating?' As a female artist I had one big question I wanted to solve. The pill free, bleeding interval was devised when the contraceptive pill first came out, only because it was felt by doctors that women would find having no periods too unacceptable (since the 1960s, taking the pill continuously could have removed periods all together) The doctors may think that women are psychologically attached to their periods, but only humans, apes and bats out of all mammals need to bleed monthly for their reproductive cycle. What does Menstruation mean, biologically, culturally and historically, to humans? Who might choose to have it, and how might they have it? Fitted with a blood dispensing mechanism and lower-abdomen-stimulating electrodes, the Menstruation Machine is a device which simulates the pain and bleeding of an average 5 day menstruation process of a human (well...I have done my best to simulate my own, at least) The machine is not worn only by men, but also by women when menstruation may become obsolete in the future and the process becomes a mere ritual of gender and identity. The music video illustrates just one example of many possibilities of how and by whom this machine can be used. 'Menstruation Machine - Takashi's Take' is a video about a boy Takashi, who builds the machine in an attempt to dress up as a female, biologically as well as aesthetically, to fulfill his desire to understand what it might feel like to be a truely 'girly' girl. He determinedly wears the machine to hang out with his girly friend in Tokyo, but… Project Credits: Music and Lyrics by Sputniko! Sound Production: DJ Codomo Video Production: AUG5, Inc.
