The Story of the Bitterroot is a heartfelt look at a most unusual plant and its relationship to a tribal culture. The bitterroot forms the lynchpin of the Salish Indian culture. The legend of how it came to be is told, along with elder's stories of gathering the plant when they were young. Contemporary tribal use of the plant is also seen, as we journey out with the tribe to the bitterroot gathering grounds. The video also examines the relationship of the plant to the Lewis and Clark expedition, and in the process, how the expedition was viewed by native peoples. This comprehensive video also tells how the bitterroot came to be Montana's state flower, how it was loved by an old man, and why its botany is so unusual.
