For this year’s Summer Open, Aperture’s annual open-call exhibition, we asked photographers to consider the ways in which our current reality might echo outlandish narratives of science fiction. The title Black Mirror is borrowed from the 2011 British television series of the same name, which imagines a dystopian near future—a Twilight Zone for the age of the smartphone. The exhibition is on view through Thursday August 13 at the Aperture gallery. For more information about submitting to the Summer Open: aperture.org/summeropen/ Selected Photographers: Farah Al Qasimi / Fabrizio Albertini / Emmanuelle Andrianjafy / Tine Bek / Arnau Blanch / Anaïs Boileau / Philippe Braquenier / Antoine Bruy / Felix R. • Is the old so ruined? You find you're in a flock

        from omphalos Added

This film is about Gesto house, a ruin on the Isle of Skye. This film explores ageing, passing time and the fragility of narrative Gesto house has been recorded as the oldest house that survives on Skye. It was apparently the first Skye house to have a slated roof with the slates tied on by heather. The house has long since lost its slates. It is listed on the 'Buildings at risk' register. One of the last of the Macleod's of Gesto, Kenneth Macleod of Gregornish, when he died in 1869 left £18000 to build a hospital. That hospital - Gesto hospital - is now also empty of life. The title of this film "Is the old so ruined? You find you're in a flock" comes from a poem by Robert Browning as included by A. S. Byatt in 'Possession. A romance.' I have included other quotes from 'Possession". I have also included quotes from: (1) 'When they lay bare' by Andrew Greig (2) 'The narrow road to the deep North" by Richard Flanagan (3) 'The black mirror' by Raymond Tallis (4) 'J' by Howard Jacobson (5) 'Living to tell the tale' by Gabriel García Márquez (6) 'Sea room" by Adam Nicolson Many thanks to Scott Naismith http://scottnaismith.com/ for allowing me to include a short extract of him painting Gesto with the Cullins behind. Please do have a look at Scott Naismith's work as I reckon that it is exceptional: http://scottnaismith.com/ The film begins with audio of an old interview with the poet Iain Crichton Smith. In this excerpt Crichton Smith responds to the criticism he had from Edwin Morgan, later Machar. Morgan described Crichton Smith as a "narrow poet". I am with Crichton Smith that such a charge is wrong. The music tracks in this film: (1) "When all the world is young" (live) by David Bowie (2) "Whole lotta love" (live) by Hozier (3) "Once around the block" (live) by Badly Drawn Boy (4) "Period piece" (live) by Lloyd Cole It interested me that Gesto has a connection with Guyana and with medicine. I say this as my 18 year old son will leave for a year's voluntary work in Guyana on the 21 August 2015. When he returns his intention is to study medicine. https://holeousia.wordpress.com/2015/01/03/andrews-year-in-guyana/ I dedicate this film to Alexander McCall Smith. I want to thank Sandy for writing to me to say that he found my films "very beautiful"

          • Drone Study #4

            from Matias Viegener Added

Shot during a participatory workshop interacting with a spy drone, a group of us see how far we can push the technology. The drone here is both passive and active, reactive and seemingly confused. We have a strong desire to touch the drone, to insert our hands where they shouldn’t be. Obviously, one of the primary human technologies, the most primal one, is our hands. This was filmed outside the ASU Grant Street Studios in Phoenix, AZ, during a residency for the University of Arizona’s MFA art program. Drone Study #4 (Dance), video, 2:01, 2014 This video is part of my project, Black Mirror, which examines this depersonalizing technology in collective, public and intimate ways. from Matias Viegener Added

Drones are everywhere in the news: the latest in technological oppression. I've been working with a small drone, sometimes in groups, using it to observe us while we observe it. My current project, Black Mirror, examines this depersonalizing technology in small, intimate and personal ways. This isn't the technology of the future — it's the technology of the present, and these remote controlled observing-machines will lace through everything we do. I'm not proposing we learn "to love the bomb," but I am interested in starting a conversation on the shape of our lives to come. Black Mirror includes videos, drawings, poems and participatory events. Among my interests here is our desire to see and our fear of being seen. For more info see mviegener.com/portfolio/black_mirror/ Made in collaboration with my "Artists as Participants" class at CalArts, with Rachel Caselli, Heisue Chung, Peter Laughlin, Rigel Mosquera, and Amanda Walker.
