Today, I Coffee Ambushed my friends at Blood:Water Mission, a cause my wife and I've deeply supported for 8 years. Blood:Water Mission helps to build clean water wells, rainwater catchment tanks, and provide HIV/AIDS and Malaria medication to people all over Africa, many in coffee-producing communities. The guys in Jars of Clay founded Blood:Water Mission in 2003, after a trip to Malawi, and since then, they've partnered with more over 800 communities in Africa, providing life-saving water and health needs for over 500,000 people in 13 different countries. Along the way the 1000 Wells Project expanded holistically to include a variety of clean water solutions and sanitation and hygiene training, as well as funding health clinics, community health workers, and support groups, which help in the prevention, treatment, care and support of communities affected by AIDS, incorporating HIV/AIDS-specific programming alongside ongoing water programming. This past May, April and I joined the organization in Nashville to celebrate their 1000th well finished. Today, I had help from local coffee professional Jackson O'Brien from Bongo Java, and used the Batdorf & Bronson Guatemala Finca El Valle. So chocolatey good. Special thanks to Mike Lenda for setting up the Ambush within.

Many rural African communities lack access to any kind of medical care. For years, Blood:Water Mission has worked to establish healthcare facilities where these rural communities exist, like the New Life Medical Center in Kitgum, Uganda. At this very moment, these facilities are providing a space for patients to be treated, doctors and staff to work, and medicine to be administered. Lives are being saved each and every day. But, there is a critical component not immediately apparent that facilities like the New Life Medical Center provides: education in health and sanitation. Within these centers, there are people called Community Health Promoters who are educated in health and sanitation. As representatives of their communities, Community Health Promoters travel sometimes great distances to Blood:Water Mission funded medical facilities to learn how to combat diseases in their homes using health and sanitation practices not usually taught where they live. The impact is enormous because many of the diseases rural communities face can be treated using simple health practices, like hand washing, which are techniques Community Health Promoters teach to their neighbors. Community Health Promoters also help reduce stigma in the regions by sharing the medical knowledge they learned at the treatment centers with their communities and neighboring communities. Through this knowledge, the causes of sickness become less of an unknown and, as a result, the fear many faced when they fell ill before is no longer feared again. Begun by Community Health Promoters, neighbors learn how they can help one another and no one is left to treat their illness alone. Equipped with disease fighting knowledge, they can now depend on each other to overcome sickness and prevent it from spreading in the future. Financial support provided to Blood:Water Mission ensures that the number of these amazing individuals will continue to grow and improve health in not only the specific areas the health facilities exist, but the regions as as whole. Give today and let us share the knowledge...together. Give. Share. Empower. http://www.bloodwatermission.com
