Nick Gentry is a different kind of artist. Collecting the things that rest of us cast away— floppy discs, x-rays, VHS tapes, and negatives—he uses discarded media that once carried our most important information and turns it into innovative art. In an effort to gauge people’s interest, he used to leave his work out on the street for people to take. Fast forward to today, and he is successfully showing—and selling—his work around the globe. And in order to keep a record of where his art has been, he creates books with Blurb.

Last year, two of the studio’s artists, Jim Plasman and Mirjam van den Beuken, brought the collective together in a remarkable book called De Kunstenaars & Ateliers van BK49 Amsterdam. More than a collection of work, it’s a document of the unique personalities and studio spaces that make up BK49. And we were lucky enough to be invited in to take a look.
