                  • BlackMagic Ursa - Quick Test Shoot

This is my first quick test with my new BlackMagic Ursa camera, I took delivery of it 4 days ago & I've been too deep in work to get much of a chance to test it so today was my first real go with the camera. I was mostly shooting in RAW 3:1 at 80FPS, so this very short video generated around 200GB of data. Camera Setup: Cine Zoom 24-70mm @ T2.5 4K RAW 3:1 180° Shutter ND 0.9 + Grad ND 0.6 Workflow: Imported in to DaVinci Resolve, colour graded to taste and then exported in ProRes 422 4K DCI. Ingested in to FCPX for editing and then exported for upload. No LUTs or film emulation used. Thoughts: For the last couple of years my main camera has been a Sony F5, which has and I'm sure will continue to serve me well. It's very much a chameleon camera being able to switch from doing films, to doing commercials & to doing simple corporates or live events. An excellent all round tool so I want to write my initial thoughts on the BlackMagic Ursa from that point of view. My first thought on this camera is that it is much easier to get used to and use straight out the box than my Sony F5 was two years ago. And possibly one of the easiest cameras I've ever used in nearly 20 years. The menu system is a dream to use, especially compared to Sony's. The blackhole sun issue is still very much there which I really hope will be fixed with the upcoming 4.6K upgrade because ultimately that is my only serious problem with this camera. A minor annoyance I would add to that is a lack of Waveform, there's a histogram which you can roughly use to gauge exposure but I'd prefer to see a full set of scopes. Otherwise it is an excellent film camera but it is that, a 'film' camera. It's heavy, it needs solid grip equipment, planning & preferably a crew. You are not going to be running around, doing fast setups for corporate or live event work. It requires a bit of forward thinking. Although it has three ISO settings (200, 400 & 800), you are not going to want to use anything but the 400 ISO setting because it just doesn't perform as well at the other two. This means lighting or ND filters, depending on the situation, will most likely be needed. There are plenty of other tests I need to do before I use it professionally such as skin tones, video mode and other codecs plus resolutions but this has given me a very clear idea of it's capabilities already. So final thoughts for the moment are that I can't wait to shoot a film on it. I genuinely believe it produces a more pleasing film image than my Sony F5 does in XAVC 4K S-Log and I can't wait for the 4.6K upgrade. The Ursa Mini will be a great companion to this beast of a camera.
