Early one morning, Maria—then nine months pregnant—and her family were stopped by the police for no discernible reason. A special breakfast outing became a nightmare—and at one of the most intimate moments of her life, Maria found a team of immigration agents—not her husband—by her side. Maria's chilling story is the centerpiece of "Checkpoint Nation? Building Community Across Borders," a powerful new documentary that depicts the reality of post-9/11 racial profiling — as mandated by laws such as SB 1040 in Arizona, which are now being imitated and implemented nationwide — along with the new and strengthening alliances of diverse groups committed to racial justice. Set in the U.S./Mexico border area near Tucson, Arizona, a region that sees more and more migrant deaths every year, the video explores the idea that the way to move forward is to find connections and build coalitions among between diverse groups of allies — including Muslim-, South Asian-, African-, and Latino-Americans; civil rights lawyers and media activists — that have identified with each other's histories and united in the common goals of justice, equality, and respect for all

When Melody drove Dwayne and I to Michigan this year over Easter break, she insisted that she and I visit Canada before we went back home. She chose an interesting time to visit Canada, also.. 11 PM at night. So that piqued the interest of border control and we were stopped for a while in-between America and Canada before we were cleared to go ahead. We shot this outside of Tim Horton's coffee shop in Sarnia, Ontario, before we headed back to the states.

            from Iris MediaWorks / Added

An Iris MediaWorks coproduction, Ilegales is a modern day dramatic feature about human trafficking along the U.S./Mexico border. From the slums of Juarez to the suburbs of New Mexico, five distinct, but connected stories weave together, exploring hope, heartbreak, and the lines people cross in search of a better life. In Juarez, a Mexican day laborer chooses to help his childhood friend traffic illegal migrant workers across the border despite his wife's fears. A young mother, after waiting 7 years to cross legally, flees Juarez in a desperate attempt to get her son the medical treatment he needs in America. In New Mexico, an illegal immigrant waiting for naturalization sells drugs to pay the bills for his American born children. Their paths collide when a low level Mexican gangster tries to work up the ladder to gain favor with the "Don" of Juarez, risking their lives as he traffics people and drugs across the border.
