This Migration Policy Institute (MPI) panel discussion offers perspectives on border policy management from leading officials in the U.S., Canadian, and Mexican governments, and showcases MPI's edited volume, Managing Borders in an Increasingly Borderless World. Book co-editors Randall Hansen of the Munk School of Global Affairs at the University of Toronto and MPI President Demetrios Papademetriou, as well as Mexican Ambassador to the United States Eduardo Medina Mora, Canada Border Services Agency Executive Vice President Malcolm Brown, former Acting Commissioner of U.S. Customs and Border Protection David V. Aguilar, and Mexico's former Undersecretary of Population, Migration, and Religious Affairs Gustavo Mohar, discuss continuing and evolving challenges in border management and security. The book covers these challenges—terrorism, organized crime, illegal migration, smuggling, trafficking, human rights, infrastructure, corruption, and economic and political factors—and offers an analysis of effective and ineffective policies and programs. The panelists discuss the challenges and successes their governments have had in pursuing better, more effective, and smarter border controls, and the deepening regional cooperation in this important policy area. Martin Lloyd traces passports back over three thousand years, using illustrations from his collection of historic passports to discover how passport design was influenced by a desire to confound the forger, how it developed from the handwritten paper to the technically complex document we use today and how forgers have responded to the challenge presented by secret safeguards. You will never look at your passport in the same light again. The transcript and downloadable versions of the lecture are available from the Gresham College website: http://www.gresham.ac.uk/lectures-and-events/fighting-the-forger-the-secrets-of-your-passport Gresham College has been giving free public lectures since 1597. Since the U.S. economy relies on immigrant workers, not to mention the $12 billion they pay in taxes, many argue there should be more avenues for them to legally come and go as needed. Jenny Yang, Vice President of Advocacy at World Relief, describes what comprehensive reform should include, as laid out in her book, _Welcoming the Stranger: Justice, Compassion & Truth in the Immigration Debate_. Shirley Hoogstra hosts.

Federal Wilderness designation expressly prohibits motorized vehicles and mechanized equipment, and has serious ramifications for all who utilize or access federal land. There are significant impacts on existing ranching operations, land stewardship and conservation, law enforcement, water management, flood control, public access, recreation, hunting, search & rescue, and fire fighting. We support a meaningful balance between environmental protection, conservation, recreation, community development, water resource management, law enforcement and respect for private property rights. We support permanently protecting and preserving the Organ Mountains and the other special areas in our county. There are viable alternatives to federal Wilderness designation that can be used to protect our land, our natural resources and our open space.
