KENE ABIGAIL MACALA – HER STORY Abigail is working with the SWAP Trust (Sanitation Water and People) in Botswana which is a Barefoot Solar Power Distributor. She is the first of a network of ‘village entrepreneurs’ in Botswana being supported by the Trust to introduce ‘green’ and alternative energy products to the rural disadvantaged areas. Hi – they call me Abi and I have a home in the remote and under-developed village of Jamataka which is about 25 kilometres west of Francistown, Botswana on the road to the Orapa diamond mine. My husband passed away 12 years ago leaving me with 3 children to support and it has been a difficult struggle to make sure they were properly fed and educated. In Jamataka there is no electricity, running water or proper roads which makes life difficult – but I hope to change all that by introducing new solar technology to this community first then in the ten surrounding villages. In so doing I will not only bring myself an income but will offer employment to many other people in the area who will also earn money. Your financial support will help me buy my first stock of solar products which will be so popular with all the people especially the school kids who will be able to have lights at night which will allow them to study and do their homework. As for their parents it will be so wonderful as candles and paraffin are now so expensive and also dangerous – many people suffer burns and even die from accidents with these things. I have done voluntary work for our VDC – the Village Development Committee – for many years and I love helping people and the community improve their way of life. If we all work together and help each other we can have much better living conditions. I am determined to make this project a success with the help of the SWAP Trust who are going to give me the advice and support to market, develop and promote my business. The kind of products I will be selling are reading lamps, mobile battery charging, house lights, touches, and small items like radio chargers. All these products will use solar power. SWAP are helping me by providing training and advice on the good things about these products.

This is the first ever documentary/film I have made. It is the product of a one month film course I was involved with for the Natural History Unit of Africa's Wildlife Film Academy in Botswana in mid 2012. Here to Stay, follows a pride of lions in their attempt to find food. They symbolise the greater notion of the animal kingdom's strength in the face of adversity. Documented in the Okavango Delta, the short film documentary touches on the impact human encroachment has on a species and their environment, the relationship between man and fauna, the undying and undeniable strength (in the end) of the process of thousands of years of evolution and the animal kingdom's ability to adapt to change. Lets hope all animals have such a chance in the hands of the human race!
