Day three begins as suddenly as it had ended at the small Buddhist enclave of Trilung Gompa. The caretaker who had fed Ben Stookesberry and Chris Korbulic, rouses the pair early with a piercing Buddhist horn. The whole community comes out to see the pair off as they embark on yet another day of NF Payette type whitewater still carrying more than two weeks worth of food. Half-way through the day a steep walled canyon appears on the horizon, sending the pair scrambling for a better look. Just a year ago Ben had ran into Mike Abbot and Allen Ellard after than attempt on the same section of river. Supposedly their attempt had ended at a shear walled gorge that sent them hiking out of the Canyon 10 km short of the Bhutan Border. After the extended scout, Ben and Chris deem the gorge manageable at river level and proceed cautiously to a night 4 camp still 15 - 20 kms from the Bhutan Border.

      • A Boat for Bangladesh

        from Compass Light / Added

On the northern coast of the Bay of Bengal, far inland within the delta of the Brahmaputra River, exists an ephemeral group of islands that are locally known as "chars." For 3 million people who could not find room to settle on the mainland, the chars are home. Everything here is transitory and difficult. Agricultural land appears, then disappears. The average char islander moves 12 to as many as 40 times in a life. Ten years ago, an NGO named Friendship began to provide health and community infrastructure for these islanders, using boats. The group is led by a Bengali woman named Runa Khan. Her friend and colleague Lisa Genasci envisioned and executive-produced A Boat for Bangladesh, triggered by the arrival of a new boat in the Friendship fleet -the RAINBOW WARRIOR 2, formerly of Greenpeace. Now Friendship can serve the deepwater coastal region. Post-produced by David Conover, Compass Light Productions www.compasslight.com

What most people don't realize about Bangladesh -- myself included before I went -- is how prolific the history of sailing is here. It's not surprising because of the number of waterways, but that changed drastically I was told when locals began putting Chinese engines on the boats. Now sailing has all but disappeared.
