At Cine Gear 2014, Switronix showed the updated version of their popular Jetpack breakout box - the Jetpack X. The Jetpack X builds on the features of the original Jetpack, but adds a built-in battery backup capable of withstanding a 200w load for up to five minutes, even when batteries are not connected. It is also incredibly versatile, featuring three LEMO outputs (5V, 7V, 12V), a USB power connection, and two unregulated powertaps, along with a 2-pin Amp connector (located behind the included cheese plate) that can connect directly to ENG cameras. Watch my video above as Jose Flores from Switronix walks me through the features of the new Jetpack X. We've covered a lot of different accessories for Sony's F5/F55 cameras, and at our booth we're featuring a couple of new ones from Solid Camera. The Scatter Box is a power breakout box that mounts onto the back of the camera and features multiple power outputs. We all know how important it is to have adequate power distribution for all our accessories, so having a unit like this can come in very handy. Another useful new accessory is the Sound Swivel, a compact unit that provides two XLR connectors for audio into the camera, and also conveniently repositions the headphone jack. The three connectors are then routed to a small swivel cube (hence the "Swivel" in the name). We've got both the Scatter Box and the Sound Swivel mounted to the Sony F55 in our booth - watch my video above to learn more about these new accessories from Solid Camera. Rare is the camera kit that has no accessories hanging off it. Monitor, lens controller, wireless transmitter, signal converter, timecode clock, focus rangefinder -- sometimes the camera can barely be seen under the accessories. These devices need power, and often the cameras themselves do not have enough outputs available. Switronix has created several versions of the JetPack, a battery mount (Anton Bauer or V-lock) with multiple power outputs in a variety of useful voltages. Each version has multiple mounting points to use with battery rigging solutions such as the Wooden Camera Battery Slide or the Anton Bauer Matrix Plate. Except for the P-Taps, which feed power out directly from the battery, all outputs are fully regulated to the specified voltage. The JP-A-EPIC ("A" for Anton Bauer, JP-V-EPIC for V-Lock) is designed for use with the RED EPIC and Scarlet cameras. Outputs: - 2x unregulated P-Taps - 1x cable feed to plug into a RED EPIC or Scarlet camera - 2x Lemo-4 12v socket - 1x Lemo-2 5v socket - 1x USB 5v socket For convenient mounting on the RED cameras, the Jetpack is also compatible with the Wooden Camera Quick Back. The JP-A-BMCC (JP-V-BMCC for V-Lock) is designed for use with the Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera. Outputs: - 2x unregulated P-Taps - 1x cable feed to plug into a Blackmagic Design Cinema Camera - 1x Lemo-4 12v socket - 1x Lemo-3 7.2v socket - 1x Lemo-2 5v socket The JP-A-XLR (JP-V-XLR for V-Lock) is designed for cameras accepting an XLR-4 power input, such as the Sony PMW-F3. Outputs: - 2x unregulated P-Taps - 1x cable feed ending in XLR-4 12v plug - 1x Lemo-4 12v socket - 1x Lemo-3 7.2v socket - 1x Lemo-2 5v socket For the new Sony PMW-F5 and PMW-F55, AbelCine asked Switronix to make a modified version of the Jetpack. The JP-A-BFIS (JP-S-BFIS for V-Lock) mounts directly to and feeds power through a V-Lock plate. In addition to the P-Taps, the other outputs are all wired ARRI standard, matching those on the Alexa cameras. Outputs: - 2x unregulated P-Taps - 1x unregulated male V-Lock plate - 2x Fischer-3 12v sockets - 1x Lemo-2 12v sockets - 1x USB 5v socket For more info on the different JetPack models, visit our blog: http://blog.abelcine.com/2013/02/19/switronix-jetpack-battery-breakout-box

Interview with Science Café presenters and web developers/designers Michael J. Newman and Scott Hutchinson. As seen on Boing Boing! http://boingboing.net/2012/03/14/library-staircase-delightfully.html Kennedy Library’s grand staircase was transformed into a live game board using wire, cans and balloons as part of the Cal Poly Science Café series. To play the game, we aimed and threw tennis balls at the cans, which acted as live switches. A digital scoreboard tracked the team’s cans as they were knocked over; it was shared on displays throughout the library and on participants’ mobile devices.
