We made this film for friends Beep Industries for a kickstarter campaign to help to ‘bring the button back’ with a new product we’ve made called Red Pop – an iPhone accessory that adds a big, red, juicy camera button to your phone and helps turn your iPhone into a 'proper' camera.

Adapted from Brendan Dawes' cityscape generator shown at OFFF Cincinnat, 2013i. I instantly saw the buildings as frequency meters, so set about making them behave as such. The fifth film in our Digital Up North series finds us in the Manchester city centre offices of magneticNorth, talking digital with mN Executive Creative Director Brendan Dawes. Chris Sharratt provides some back story to the chat. There’s something refreshingly analogue about Brendan Dawes’ digital obsession, something pleasingly real and tangible. Dawes considers himself a maker rather than a designer; a man who likes to get his hands dirty, albeit while surrounded by the white walls and (original) Eames chairs of magneticNorth’s city centre offices. He may be Executive Creative Director of a digital agency, but he is not a man to be constrained by corporate identity. Yes, he’s 100 per cent committed to the business but he’s anything but a company man. He has his fingers in many creative pies. You’ll find plenty of information about his personal projects – such as Whilst I Was Sleeping, which involves a brown paper bag, an Instagram feed and print outs of the ten most recent pictures by people he’s following – at brendandawes.com. (Strapline: ‘I am excited. I make things. My mum says I’m good with computers.’) But while that description sounds rather cosy and homespun, in reality some of his good work with computers – typographic news explorer DoodleBuzz for example – has had a direct kickback to the business-oriented world of magneticNorth. It has also found its way into one of the world’s most important art museums, MOMA; pieces from his Cinema Redux project featured in shows at the New York gallery in 2008 and 2010. Yet there is no suggestion that Dawes is some kind of frustrated artist trapped inside a company director’s mind. His focus on good design is as much to do with simple, practical solutions to everyday needs as it is aesthetics. Which brings us to Beep Industries, of which Dawes is co-founder and partner along with three others. Beep is responsible for MIXA (‘A USB cassette for your digital stuff!’); MoviePeg (‘The super simple stand for iPhone and iPad’); and the soon-to-be-available Red Pop (‘The big red button for your iPhone camera’). The latter was still very much under wraps when our interview took place. Dawes is the not-so-mad inventor behind all three, products that fulfill the Beep Industries brief of being ‘simple, elegant objects that do one thing well’. Of course, Dawes is not content with doing just the one thing well. He has a lot on his mind, ideas that need to be acted on, stuff that needs to be made. But most importantly, 30 years on from his first Sinclair ZX81 computer, you sense that for Dawes it’s still all about the magic of digital, rather than the maths. mnatwork.com

In 2010 Brendan Dawes spoke at Flash on the Beach at one of the Inspired Sessions. Attendees are encouraged to leave their bags and laptops back at the hotel, and just come along in the evening to get inspired. The sessions are delivered by inspirational, motivational speakers. We were very happy and proud that Brendan wanted to speak at FOTB2010. This session is approx an hour long. http://www.flashonthebeach.com http://www.geekybynature.com http://twitter.com/FOTB http://twitter.com/geekybynature
