We wander past the familiar Sierras to the barren and magical White Mountains of eastern California. Up at 11,000 feet, we find the Patriarch Grove of Ancient Bristlecone Pines - a place where these hearty trees have survived with some individuals dating back over 4,000 years.

The Ancient Bristlecone National Forest of the White Mountains in California is a very special place for me. I try to get there at least once every year. I was there this summer and shot with my new Panasonic GH3 and absolutely loved the time with the camera and the trees! This is a true hybrid video that includes both stills and video. I wanted to do something that expressed a bit about the pines as well as about how I saw them.

On October 10th, 2008, Bryan Bowers and Garrett Sullivan visited the Windy Ridge Bristlecone Pine Scenic Area near Alma, Colorado. After a hearty breakfast at the Brown Burro Restaurant in Fairplay, we drove as close as we could get to the park with a 2 wheel drive low riding Volkswagen. After abandoning the car at a mining ruin, we walked about a mile to the park at 11,700 feet. It was a sunny, cool day, and like the park sign said: "Windy". We walked the ridge for about an hour, taking in the majesty of the barren ridge with so many gnarled bristlecones. We gathered a few specimens and took in the view of Alma. We went back to Fairplay to Bryan's Van. Bryan had a concert to play that night in Glenwood Springs and he called his contact for directions to the hall where he was to play. I marveled at his hand written directions and mental sticky notes that he tucked away before driving over Hoosier Pass, through Breckenridge and beyond. (There is another story to be told...) It was a day to remember, with a friend I will never forget.

"A sensitive portrait by Cathy Vogan of the dancer Ernest Berk at over eighty years of age. His body, his wrinkles, his views on old-age and sexuality, his zest for life link up with a reflection on time from both a biographical and phylogenetic perspective. Experience and wisdom has gathered in the wrinkles of the skin just as in the warped bark of ancient trees. The recent death of Ernest Berk makes this approach to him as "Methuselah," the magician of life, a final poetic document of the times."
