How far past Ashcroft would I need to get before the first train? Not far .... close to Basque CN 2306 East showed up with what turned out a short Intermodal. Sunshine, Sagebrush, the river and trains! What a combination!

Back in May, my wife and I were in Harrison for a conference. Like any dedicated video or RC guy, I brought toys along. Though the wind was crazy gusty, I got some flying in during a break at the conference.

The annual family camping trip found us based from Otter Lake in the Tulameen area for 4 days. On the second day, we folded up the tent and went exploring in the morning. Managed to find the Blakeburn town site and the Mullen mine ruins, south of Coalmont. We then headed out on the Tulameen River FSR, followed by our friends in their Dodge Minivan to the Tulameen Falls. The falls did not disappoint! My research said that the trail down to the falls was 1.1km... but it turned out to be just over 4km each way. The Tulameen River was cold, clear and the falls are worth a return trip!

Abbotsford Hospital alpine hike to Needle Peak, BC. Very successful adventure as twenty one climbers made it to the summit. Great weather allowed for exploration of endless mountain ridges and made it possible to cool off in a remote alpine lake. Swimming while surrounded by lingering snow was unforgettable experience.

A day trip quest to the end of Lost Creek FSR where we find the beautiful Kenyon Lake. We also found and ventured down the P2P trail but aborted in the dense forested area as it was over the capabilities of our rigs.

                  • CN Rail -- The day CN 5779 (SD751) decided she had enough

from HJ Mueller (aka The Old Railfan) Added 189 0 0

At the tailend of a really great day I decided to follow CN5779 East from North Bend to Kamloops. Little did I know! Shot the obligatory sequence of the train setting across the Fraser on the Lower Cisco bridge. After that it was off to an untested location at the westend of Thompson. I waited and I waited. One Westbound ..... and another Westbound ... but 5779 shows up at the same time. Reframe the shot and keep filming. There had been some "on air chatter" about a problem with CN 5779 East but nothing specific. Well ... in the meantime 5779 decided to quit and the long intermodal had plenty to go before the grade would flatten. The engineer reported "We can't with just 4000hp", time for RTC in Calgary to make a decision. Leave X number of cars on the Thompson siding, secure and then proceed. It was interesting watching while listening to the back and forth between the engineer and the brakeman. When I saw three guys getting on - crew change at North Bend - I figured one was a trainee (no pun intended!) , but the extra hands must have come in handy (still no pun).
