    In the 1830s the Al Khalifa family signed the first of many treaties establishing Bahrain as a British Protectorate. A few years after its independence, the National Assembly was disbanded after it attempted to legislate the end of the Al-Khalifa rule. Critics of the ruling family and those calling for the restoration of the National Assembly are silenced, arrested or deported. Bahrain has cooperated with the US on various occasions including during the Iraq war and has been a base for U.S. naval activity in the Gulf since 1947. Bahrain is the headquarters of the US Navy's Fifth Fleet and is designated by the US as a Major non-NATO ally. In February 2011 thousands of protesters gathered in the Bahraini capital, demanding democracy. Human Rights abuses were reported as Saudi troops were called in and excessive force was used on demonstrators.
