Black soldier fly composter made from a discarded bathtub. A cement ramp leads to the drain hole. There are also holes drilled in the bottom of the tub to allow liquid drainage. When the maggots are ready to pupate they attempt to crawl away from the compost and the only way out is the drain hole. On the other side of the drain is a drop and plunk into a pan chickens have access to. It was almost free to build (I bought the cement) but moving it would be a chore.

www.pleckgatewebsite.co.uk www.aedas.com www.broomheadshomemade.com Pleckgate High School is a mixed 11-16 comprehensive school on the outskirts of Blackburn with Darwen and serves the communities on the northern edge of town. It has a specialist status as a Mathematics and Computing College and describes itself as a multi-cultural community of pupils, staff, parents and carers. The new school was designed by architects Aedas, and the resulting buildings now accommodate 1300 pupils and 200 staff. The original BSF artist-in-schools residencies were curated for the Shine Local Education Partnership as a precursor to Artistcall, and the brief set for Pleckgate was for an artist to input into integrated public art works within the fabric of the building’s interior and exterior. The schools brief for Shine was largely retrospective as the new building was already nearing completion and an artist had limited opportunity to install public art works within the fabric of the building, although opportunities existed to overlap artistically with such things as architectural lighting and soft and hard landscaping. As such, artist and architect Tony Broomhead of Broomheads' Homemade was selected by a combined Shine Selection Panel for a single residency, and produced an integrated arts strategy with delivered works that included such things as a computer-controlled lighting to the main atrium rooflight, enhanced hard landscaping and community walk and ‘seed-bombing’ planting events and videos. Designs are now complete. Walk Pleckgate was a community walk inspired by the stories of people like ex Pleckgate student Pete, aimed to build a map of all the places around Pleckgate that had a relevance - no matter how big or small. On 21st May 2011 two walks were held around Pleckgate. These visited places that were of interest and surprise. Many of these places were pointed out to us by local people. The walks will be recorded and edited into a short film. Once we built up a map of all the places that were seen as important, we then used that to inform the artwork. Broomheads’ Homemade are a creative practice with a background in design and architecture. Our goal is to bring something positive to peoples’ environment creating public art that can be understood and embraced. Our ethos: "‘Homemade’ symbolises what we feel is important: honesty; keeping things simple; commissioning local and using the fewest materials or ingredients; turning nothing into something; bringing people together; and using our home to make art that brings a smile". Working with people: "For us understanding, listening and visualising is key to working with people. Organising workshops and enthusing groups to come up with ideas is a really enjoyable part of the design process. This is where the simplest of ideas can spark a fantastic piece of design". Placemaking: "We work with unloved and unused spaces and produced good design that enhanced and instilled pride. For us taking time to understand the environment and the people who use it is paramount"

Designs are now complete. Pleckgate Planting Day was created out of the fact that the Pleckgate site is unique in that it has numerous public footpaths running through it.These routes are often under-defined and under-used. The pathways around the football pitches for example lead to a protected wild plant habit that is a great local resource. By defining these routes we felt it would enhance the area and encourage use. They could be marked in quite a delicate way. We hoped that the community could plant seeds and bulbs along the side of the paths, and then each spring the routes would burst into life with a flurry of colour. This project allowed the community and the school to work together to have a meaningful contribution to the area. An inaugural community planting day encouraged communities to get together and improve their landscape. Broomheads’ Homemade are a creative practice with a background in design and architecture.
