Segments from two speeches in 'Breaking Away,' at the Tivoli Turnhalle on Auraria Campus in Denver, performed by students from Denver School of Arts. 'Breaking Away' dramatizes the 1908 meeting of the National Negro Anti-Taft League four weeks after the Democratic National Convention. The NNATL sought to throw their support behind William Jennings Bryan and the Democratic Party, a break from African Americans' historic ties to the Republican Party since emancipation. Taft, then president Roosevelt's secretary of war, issued a mass dishonorable discharge of members of the African American 25th cavalry. Members had been blamed for the killing of a white woman and shooting of a law enforcement official in Brownsville, TX in 1905. Contemporary and future investigations had upheld their innocence. The Funerals of Boswain's Mate Johnnie Franklin Callahan, Specialist Six James William Dunn and Corporal Isaiah Mays were conducted at Arlington National Cemetery May 29, 2009. It was an honor to be a part of this event. On February 15, 1890 Corporal Isaiah Mays was awarded the Medal of Honor. He laid in an unmarked grave in Phoenix, Arizona until members of the Old Guard Riders and the Missing In America project found him. The state legislature granted the Old Guard Riders next of kin status and the three gentlemen were escorted across the country to Arlington where they were finally laid to rest with the honors they so richly deserved.
