Stickboy, An Opera in Three Acts Music composed by Neil Weisensel Libretto by Shane Koyczan, based on his book, Stickboy Late last year, Shane Koyczan and Vancouver Opera asked if we'd like to partner on a brand new opera. We had never worked with projections, long-form animation, or live performance (not to mention opera!) before, so of course we said: yes please! Ten months later, our work is being projected over three massive screens, illustrating over 40 background settings and dark inner-workings of the main character in a 2-hour long stage performance called Stickboy. You can see it live in Vancouver until November 7, 2014 (visit vancouveropera.ca for more info). BULLY - in theaters March 30th, 2012 Please visit our website at: www.thebullyproject.com This year, over 13 million American kids will be bullied, making it the most common form of violence young people in the U.S. experience. Directed by Sundance- and Emmy-award winning filmmaker, Lee Hirsch, The Bully Project is a beautifully cinematic, character-driven documentary—at its heart are those with the most at stake and whose stories each represent a different facet of this bullying crisis.  Following five kids and families over the course of a school year, the film confronts bullying’s most tragic outcomes, including the stories of two families who’ve lost children to suicide and a mother who waits to learn the fate of her 14 –year-old daughter, incarcerated after bringing a gun on her school bus. With rare access to the Sioux City Community School District, the film also gives an intimate glimpse into school busses, classrooms, cafeterias and even principles offices, offering insight into the often-cruel world of children, as teachers, administrators and parents struggle to find answers. While the stories examine the dire consequences of bullying, they also give testimony to the courage and strength of the victims of bullying and seek to inspire real changes in the way we deal with bullying as parents, teachers, children, and in society as a whole. Through the power of these stories, The Bully Project aims to be a catalyst for change and to turn the tide on an epidemic of violence that has touched every community in the United States—and far beyond.

Corporal punishment was found to be cruel and unusual punishment by the United States Court of Appeals for the Eighth Circuit in 1968. It is banned in the U.S. military, in correctional facilities and in mental institutions however, use of the paddle is still allowed in many U.S. public schools. More than two hundred thousand students are hit every year by their teachers, principals or coaches with many incidents resulting in injury. A bill to ban corporal punishment in public schools on a national level has been introduced, but Congress has yet to acknowledge it by enacting this federal legislation. Historically, the paddle was a tool used to beat slaves in order to cause fear and inflict pain. The United States is the only nation in the western world that still permits the use of corporal punishment in its educational system. The Board Of Education is a documentary that takes an in-depth and personal look at discipline within the American educational system. The film focuses on the three states with the highest percentage of reported students hit, Alabama, Mississippi and Texas. We travel to these states for interviews with politicians, administrators, teachers, parents and students about this polarizing issue. We raised the funds for our film using Kickstarter. We would not have been able to make this film without the support of the DSLR community and people like you. Today, Kickstarter remains a valid way for filmmakers to raise funds for independent film. Corporal Punishment is still prevalent in nineteen states with over two hundred thousand students hit every year. What do you do when the teacher is the bully? PLEASE DO NOT DOWNLOAD OR COPY THIS VERSION.
