As part of the celebrations surrounding the opening of Carnarvon's Space and Technology Museum Dr Buzz Aldrin paid the West Australian town of Carnarvon a special visit to help commemorate the occasion and the remote town's historic role in the space race. Commissioned by NASA in 1964, the Carnarvon Tracking Station operated for 11 years and was the last point of communication between rockets leaving earth's orbit and space capsules returning, just before they splashed down in the Pacific Ocean.
