In Spring, 2015, with financial support from an Avon Foundation for Women’s Campus Grant to Activate Bystanders to Reduce Sexual Violence, Dating Abuse, and Stalking Award, STRIVE was able to hold a Be a Game Changer Video Contest for UF students. Students entered videos designed to educate our campus on how to intervene to end sexual violence, and our panel of independent judges from Alachua County Victim Services and Rape Crisis Center, Peaceful Paths Domestic Abuse Network, and Gainesville’s Child Advocacy Center chose the winners! Second prize went to Brittany Evans, Melissa Baker, and Kaitlyn Benfield for Be a Game Changer.

This video is a message to all of humanity; emphasizing that walking away from bullying and racism is never the right answer. One must stand up for their beliefs and thoughts, and not tolerate harassment whatsoever. The story shows a girl who is bullied by her fellow students and her reaction towards them. She reacts maturely, until she decides to walk away with her two best friends. This video also shows how to reach out to a friend who is being placed in this scenario, and how to not be a bystander, but an upstander.

Statement: People often are not aware of what action to take when they witness a woman being assaulted. Similarly, they are unsure how to respond when they meet a woman who has been assaulted. Despite many organizations efforts to deal with domestic violence or sexual violence, people are still unsure of how to help the woman during or following such events. Design can be used to increase the capacity for a bystander to provide the victim assistance and empower them to take action. Problem: Diffusion of responsibility among the bystanders. Communicative medium: Advertisement in Movie Theater. Due to the presence of others, the person is not pressured to take action and it is assumed that accountability of action is shared among all of those present. One of the reasons why bystanders do not intervene is that they think it might be harmful for them to interfere or it is none of their business. Often time people ignore it or do not interfere is because they think it’s a personal matter between partners. Encountering diffusion of responsibility among the bystander and making them think about the possible actions they can take when they witness Domestic Violence. Advertisement in Movie Theater is surprising and unexpected. The whole intention behind this advertisement was to show that Domestic Violence is not a movie, which you watch silently so speak up against it.
