After a long roadtrip through the southern tip of Baja California, we arrived at Cabo Pulmo. After many years of wanting to visit this area we finally arrived and were greeted by howling northern winds. After a few grounded days we finally dived in the Protected Marine Reserve. Paralyzed by the amount of life we saw, we can only praise the Castro family, local dive shops and small hotels for uniting and protecting this unique reef. I'm sure we will return to this unspoiled patch of paradise, over and over again... Video and editing by: Jero Prieto

Cabo Pulmo is the northernmost coral reef in the eastern Pacific, and, at around 20,000 years old, it may be the oldest and most important reef in the American Pacific. The preservation of Cabo Pulmo is a local, national, and international success story. After decades of intense fishing had depleted Cabo Pulmo’s marine life, the local communities secured protected status for the reef from the government. In 1995, the State of Baja California Sur made Cabo Pulmo a Natural Protected Area; in 2000 Mexico dedicated it as a National Marine Park. In 2005, it was designated a UNESCO World Heritage Site as one of the “Islands and Protected Areas of the Gulf of California”. In 2008, Cabo Pulmo became a Ramsar International Wetlands Site. This video was designed as educational material and was not created for Profit Purposes as stipulated by the mission of the Gulf of California Marine Program at SIO.

Walter Munk unlocked the secret to predicting waves, conquered the dark side of the moon, broke the code that revealed ocean warming and set off the sound that was literally “heard round the world.” Yet, he still hasn’t seen a Mobula munkiana, the endangered Ray that marine biologist Giuseppe Notarbartolo named in his honor. So, at 96, he and three generations of his scientific heirs set off on an expedition to Cabo Pulmo, Baja’s secret miracle - to figure out why Munk’s Devil Ray flies.

A thriving undersea wildlife park tucked away near the southern tip of Mexico’s Baja peninsula has proven to be the world’s most robust marine reserve in the world. A 10-year analysis of Cabo Pulmo National Park (CPNP), revealed that the total amount of fish in the reserve ecosystem (the “biomass”) boomed more than 460 percent from 1999 to 2009. Citizens living around Cabo Pulmo, previously depleted by fishing, established the park in 1995 and have strictly enforced its “no take” restrictions. The most striking result is that fish communities at a depleted site can recover up to a level comparable to remote, pristine sites that have never been fished by humans. This video was designed as educational material and was not created for Profit Purposes as stipulated by the mission of the Gulf of California Marine Program at SIO.
