This video was originally posted on Vimeo March 11th by Emily Carr University. Jeremy Shaw works in a variety of media to explore altered states and the cultural and scientific practices that attempt to map transcendental experience. Often combining strategies from the realms of conceptual art, documentary film, music video, and scientific research, Shaw’s work has addressed topics ranging from psychedelic drugs, brain imaging and hypnosis, to snake-handling, straight-edge hardcore and time travel. Shaw graduated from Emily Carr Institute of Art and Design in 2000 and has since had solo exhibitions at MoMA PS1, US, Schinkel Pavillon, DE, and the Museum of Contemporary Canadian Art. He has been featured in group exhibitions at StedelijkMueseum, NL, Palais de Tokyo, FR, and Centre d’art Contemporain, CH. Work by Shaw is held in public collections worldwide including the Museum of Modern Art, New York, and the National Gallery of Canada. He is represented by Johann König, Berlin, and Macaulay and Co. Fine Arts, Vancouver. This talk is part of the Visual Art Forums, presented by the Faculty of Visual Art + Material Practice and the Faculty of Graduate Studies at Emily Carr University of Art + Design, in collaboration with the Contemporary Art Gallery. It is free and open to the public.
