JR Larson’s 2009 video Migration presents a theatrical abstraction of floating bars shimmying, disappearing and forming anew in linear space. This is a recording of an ephemeral event: the eyesore of traffic is captured and transformed into an ethereal soliloquy of light play using a makeshift camera obscura. The resulting grain of the image harkens back to a bygone era while offering the viewer the opportunity to meditate. Overall Migration is a refreshing break from our media soaked world. 120 Minutes. Contact the artist for a full viewing. * Musical accompaniment by Dana Nielsen to follow.

Drawing in a room with a covered image, a pen, a tablet and a control module. This video shows the process of drawing using the machine. Unveiling the image with the tip of a pen. The control module is used with the hand that is not holding the pen in order to engage the user's body in the experience. It is a quiet process with a duration that goes unnoticed by the one who draws.

Horace Dall (1901-86) was a legendary telescope maker and optical worker living in Luton, Bedfordshire, UK. I made this video in 1982 using a VHS camera linked to a large home VHS recorder. We visit Horace's attic and see his camera obscura and some of his telescopes including the famous folding 6" reflector now on display in the Science Museum. We then go down to his workshop where he shows us some of the other instruments he made, including a highly sensitive aneroid barometer and a single-lens microscope, plus some colour photos from the 1920s.
