      • SHORT FILM: Play Time (2009)

Play Time was about many things for me. I wanted to shoot a film entirely out doors versus entirely indoors, as was the case with my first film. I wanted to make a G rated film, something innocent and magical, but adult and visceral. I decided to explore cancer in the most vulnerable way possible, childhood cancer. I lost my mom to cancer and wanted to infuse that experience into the project. Play Time was a huge production, forty-three cast and crew, Equity and SAG edible players, working with people who worked full time in show business, it was an extraordinary growth experience. The film debuted in the International Christian Film Festival just outside of London, even though it was not a film driven by a given faith. It got several nominations and went on to tour Europe, as well as three stateside festivals. Like my first film, exposition was an issue, some clunky places here and there but all in all, I feel good about this sweet little second film. Conrad Gonzales who had done very little film work at that point, gave the project everything he had playing the lead- so very brave and emotionally available, a joy to work with. Tamara Jolaine from my first film returns, bringing a soulfulness and stability to the project. I really liked the idea of exploring "play" as a device to break down the armor of a dad facing his worst nightmare. As well, I really viewed this piece as being more about the Protagonist's inner journey, his inner battles, then anything else. In hindsight, I wish I would have put a harsher edge on that inner battle. Regardless, so many beautiful moments, so many happy accidents, a lovely experience.
