              • Breast Cancer: Overcoming Cultural Boundaries

                from Thouria Mahmoud Added 73 1 0

Qatar has been developing ever since it started to invest greatly in education. It has taken a great shift in its attitude towards education and therefore has a greater multitude and range of acceptance. Although Qatar is undergoing these economical and international moves, it still has a great pride towards its cultures and traditions and therefore focuses a great deal of effort in preserving them. That being said, it is true that Qatar has a new and modernizing scope of the world but it still has its cultural boundaries. Breast cancer is a very controversial issue in the Middle East. It is a tabooed topic in the GCC countries. The silence has to break because studies show that breast cancer, if diagnosed early, has a survival rate of almost 90%. The October 2009 Think Pink Campaign enlightened my partner, Zainab Sultan, and myself to make a short documentary film about the cultural boundaries revolving the issue of breast cancer in Qatar for our Sophomore year final project. Because of the subject of breast cancer is tabooed in Qatar, we unfortunately did not get any local Qatari women to tell their story on camera; but we did get interviews with expats living in Qatar facing some of the same hardships. After receiving top marks for the film, we submitted it to Al-Jazeera Documentary Film Festival. The film got short-listed and was screened in the festival mid April. We thank our journalism professor, Chris Booker and all those who helped us. We hope you enjoy the short film and get an idea of how the issue of breast cancer is dealt with in Qatar. Thank you, Best, Thouria Mahmoud

                      from William Hider Added 73 0 0

My good friend Michael Tamburello's cat passed away this past weekend after battling with an aggressive cancer. Putting this together got pretty emotional even for me, though she did not belong to me. I've never been much of a cat person, but the loss of any animal hits me close. At the end of this video is the last footage of her. After one of those clips, she actually jumped up on my chest and laid there and let me pet her. I like to think she remembered me being nice to her the few times I was able to see her and visit Michael in the past seven years. I'll never forget that moment. She was given to Michael around 2003 by Valerie, a friend of Rachel Joy Scott, who was murdered at Columbine High School. She was a very loving cat, who Michael described as having almost a human-like set of emotions. She was really more like a small person than an ordinary cat. Michael's daughter Nina had her wedding this past weekend, and I spent the week visiting them. As it always seems to be in life, not long after one of life's high points, you get crushing lows. In the back of Michael's mind during the business of the wedding, he knew he had a sick cat who probably didn't have much longer to live. It's been a difficult week for him. I was with him during the stop at PetSmart to buy his cat's last meal. He had hoped for one last normal week to spend with her after all the stress had gone away, but he must have felt it unfair to let her continue in pain. This is my tribute to a great companion and cherished friend of his family. RIP Monkey
