Update: check the 2.0 version! http://vimeo.com/34824490 A quick installation prototype Emily and I hooked up with the libfreenect Kinect drivers and ofxKinect. The system is doing skeleton tracking on the arm and determining where the shoulder, elbow, and wrist is, using it to control the movement and posture of the giant funky bird! Speed project - made in a day using openFrameworks and libFreenect. Concept and Production by Design I/O Emily Gobeille - Theo Watson http://design-io.com 3D depth camera for arm tracking, courtesy of Microsoft and the open source / diy community :) If you're interested in making projects with the Kinect and openFrameworks check out the addon as it progresses on the OF forums. http://openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24948#p24948 Also keep an eye on the libfreenect GitHub for latest updates to the driver - https://github.com/OpenKinect/libfreenect/

www.mysecretheart.co.uk http://www.msavisuals.com/my_secret_heart My Secret Heart is a music and film installation & performance commissioned by Streetwise Opera with music composed by Mira Calix and sound design by David Sheppard. Working with video artists Flat-e, we created a film to accompany the 48 minute performance, as well as versions for an installation and short film. Streetwise Opera are a charity who use music as a tool to help people who have experienced homelessness move forward in their lives. They run a weekly music programme, resident in 10 homeless centres around the country - and also stage an annual production which gives their performers the chance to star in quality shows where there are high-expectations, no compromise and no patronising. The voices you hear in the music, and people you see in the film, are from Streetwise workshops around the UK. 100+ Streetwise performers also sang at the My Secret Heart premiere at the Royal Festival Hall in December 2008. My Secret Heart is about their story. The film has an abstract narrative derived from individual conversations with each of the Streetwise performers. It is a direct emotional response to their stories combined with the haunting beauty of Mira Calix's composition. Instead of focusing on a specific plot, the film embarks on a complex journey through various states of emotion, starting from pre-birth through birth, curiosity, exploration, excitement, playfulness; through to fear, anxiety and isolation. While it maintains a relatively dark and eerie mood overall, intertwined with the feelings of desperation are strong elements of hope. The visuals were created primarily with custom software written with C++/openFrameworks, with some Quartz Composer elements, rendered AfterEffects sequences and live action footage. The custom C++ app is audio-reactive and user-interactive, allowing the visuals to be 'performed' live with full control over the behaviour of the virtual inhabitants of the cylindrical aquarium-like rig. This is a port/adaptation of Hector Martin's libfreenect for OS X made by Theodore Watson. Hector Martin's Libfreenect project page is here: http://git.marcansoft.com/?p=libfreenect.git Most of the code is unchanged but there are some changes to libusb which was needed to get it running ( and a few extra libusb commands ) as well as some tweaking of the transfer sizes. It should be self contained and you shouldn't need to install libusb ( the app links it directly ). Grab the Source Code: UPDATE: ( Tested on OS X 10.6.3 - 32bit now and with fixes ) http://theo.tw/deliver/kinect/001-libfreenect-modded-osx-updated.zip ofxKinect for OF users - thanks Dan! http://www.openframeworks.cc/forum/viewtopic.php?p=24948#p24948 Tips: - Try both usb ports. - Try not to have too many other devices plugged in ( or any ).

Update: For a newer neural net simulator optimized for image processing, see http://neural2d.net. Update: For a beginner's introduction to the concepts and abstractions needed to understand how neural nets learn and work, and for tips for preparing training data for your neural net, see the new companion video "The Care and Training of Your Backpropagation Neural Net" at http://vimeo.com/technotes/neural-net-care-and-training . Neural nets are fun to play with. Join me as we design and code a classic back-propagation neural net in C++, with adjustable gradient descent learning and adjustable momentum. Then train your net to do amazing and wonderful things. More at the blog: http://www.millermattson.com/dave/

Skataviz is an experimental prototype developed by Design I/O which uses an iPhone or iPod touch attached to a skateboard to record its motion and visualize its movement as 3D data augmented over live video. Using the gyroscope and accelerometer sensors of the iPod, the software is able to recreate the motion of the run, detecting moments of high rotation and acceleration as 'tricks' and visualizing the angles and axis of the boards movement. The project uses openFrameworks ( http://www.openframeworks.cc ) for both the iOS sensor recorder and the desktop visualization.
