Hit the Norfolk Canyon Sun-Mon (28-29 Sep 2014) with Lanie, Wes, Mike K, and Rich. We've had endless days of E and NE hard wind but it finally let up so we can get out. Left the inlet at 11 am to a smooth bay and pretty good ride out. Put lines in 25 fathoms looking for wahoo so put out an all wire spread. Why is it that when you are ready for wahoo they never show up? Weeds, weeds and more weeds was our story and no hits except for an occasional pop of the clip getting us excited only for a huge clump of weeds. Once we hit the canyon at least some of the weeds were formed up and we pulled a some gaffers off the line. Headed to the NE notch of the canyon and found the pilot whales. Pulled out the wire for fluoro rigs hoping for YFT or BE. As the sun was going down the pilot whales were getting more active but the weeds were still thick as can be and getting harder and harder to see so the crew just kept clearing the lines over and over again. Finally right after the sun sets the center rigger screams off. Hit a green bird with a white 3 ounce Joe Shute from Sterling Tackle. We get Rich harnessed up and he puts a lot of pressure on this fish getting him to harpoon range in 30 minutes. Last 10 minutes of the fight the pin in the plate breaks causing Rich some issues but he continues to fight the fish. Good harpoon throw and the fish is ours, a 176 lb eyeball. Here is the video. Watch how many weeds float by to get an idea of how bad the weeds were. Get cleaned up and setup for chunking and sword fishing. SW drift at 0.8 knots so I push NE a little to drift back over the all bait. 3 sword rods out (2 floats and 1 tip all squid rigs this time as the squid seems to be the main bait around. Around 9 pm the tip rod screams and it's a nice mako. Mike Kim on the rod and gives him hell going from one side of the boat to the other before we can clear the lines. I get to the use my harpoon twice in one trip sticking him right in the gill plate. (forgot to the turn the video camera on). Goes nuts once stuck but get him under control and slice open his belly to remove the organs. Hang him over the side and still takes over an hour to die. Nice 80 inch Mako for Mike Kim. Cut the mako head off and both big eye and mako fit nicely in the fish bag. Put the mako head in the fish box in case we get checked. Around midnight another mako hits the tip rod and this one bigger than the first. Rich fights him to the boat and after a second and third wind we get a good release. Get the lines back out and just as I'm sending down the last line something grabs it and screams off. My wind on leader breaks off at the loop-to-loop connection. That one felt like the sword we were looking like but never know. Going to have to check and recheck all my connections from now on. No more hits that night but seas lay out nicely for an enjoyable evening on the Norfolk. Here is sunrise with lines in the water back in the eyeball hole. Trolled hard around the pilot whales again but no other hits. Weeds still thick as ever. Nobody wants to shag weeds all day again so with lots of meat in the box/

This weeks episode finds Soulstice and her crew at Fishtails in Block Canyon where in December of last year, we were shutout of Tuna for the first time in the Canyons. A lot of other boats were fishing Atlantis this week as the water has been established but we chose to take a chance here where a new filament of water has spun off from the Gulf Stream. In this episode we were wolfpacked by large Yellowfin, found some great size Mahi, and explored the Tails with very few others around. See how our adventure turned out. Filmed completely on GoPro Hero's 3 and 3+. Music by The Glitch Mob.

Soulstice and her crew kicked off the 2014 Canyon Fishing Season early by taking a trip to Atlantis during the first week of June. With no reports coming this early in the season, we decided to go and make the reports. There was only a handful of boats out but we went 6 for 6 on nice Yellowfin Tuna that we kept and there was plenty more rats to be had. We beat our previous set record of June 15th for the earliest Tuna aboard Soulstice. How can you beat 76 degree water and Yellowfin Tuna in the Canyons during the first week of June in the Northeast. This is going to be a great season ahead.
