Black Diamond athlete Patxi Usobiaga has won World Cups, world championships, and onsighted 8c+. Now? Injuries from a nasty car wreck have forced him to retire from the training rigors required for competition climbing and high-end sport climbing. Patxi, forever obsessed with climbing, has redirected his motivations and aspirations into enjoying the freedom and adventure of multi-pitching on Europe’s endless limestone alpine walls. The video below was shot on the immaculate walls of Switzerland’s Rätikon by Bernardo Gimenez and does a wonderful job of profiling Patxi’s transition in his climbing life.

from Black Diamond Equipment Added 39.5K 143 1

Black Diamond athletes Kate Rutherford and Brittany Griffith hiked in to the High Sierras' famed Incredible Hulk to have a go at the 1200-foot granite wall’s prime line, Venturi Effect. Stacked with numerous techy pitches of 5.11 and 5.12 stemming and jamming, the pair gave it all they had. Though they came up short of a redpoint, Andrew Burr did come back with some great footage from the adventure that we have since edited into the video below. Entire FULL LENGTH VERSION Here: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=kJjelhDdwVM& The El Camino Del Rey [aka The Kings Pathway, aka The Worlds Most Dangerous Path] is a one of a kind trail that offers everything... phenomenal views, difficult ascents, natural history, and also a deteriorated pathway that makes you question every footstep or handgrip you take. IMPORTANT: There are more than 100 Million people in the world without mobility. This not only effects them but also their family, friends, and sometimes an entire community. For $64 you can give a wheelchair to someone desperately in need. Go to http://FreeWheelChairMission.org and donate. I, and others, are blessed to be able to walk, let alone climb one of the most unique and beyond beautiful pathways in the world. [WARNING: Do not replicate what I did in this video. There are portions where I go without my gear. This should be done with proper equipment and not done alone. Also, although it IS in fact easily accessible, it still is illegal. 2012 is the last year the 'walk' is available. Spain is demolishing it and turning the area into a more 'tourist friendly' park.] This was filmed in one consecutive sequence on the GoPRO Hero2 starting from the trailhead. It took 1 hour and 42 minutes. It was compressed, slowed down/sped up into a 5 minute sizzle reel. In reality it would only take someone about 20 minutes to walk carefully each way (40 total) without straps but you definitely will want to stop and take in the EPIC views! Black Diamond athlete Sonnie Trotter rolled through Salt Lake City this past spring on his way to Indian Creek and stopped by BD HQ for a quick hello. He said he wanted make his own carabiner, so we took him downstairs to the carabiner manufacturing area real quick and ran him through most of the process: bending the rod stock, forging the biner, trimming the excess, heat treating it, running it through tumble and polish, installing the gate, and pull testing the finished biner.

                • From The Corner Office #1: BD founder/CEO Peter Metcalf and his office/museum

from Black Diamond Equipment Added 2,996 15 0

Black Diamond Equipment’s founder and CEO, Peter Metcalf, has a corner office—the only proper corner office at BD. He moved into it when BD relocated from California in 1991, and over the past 20-plus years his corner office has become filled with an eclectic collection of historical documents, photos, awards, trivia and miscellany. “Everything in here wouldn’t be if it didn’t have a special memory, something that it was commemorating or honoring,” says Metcalf. “But if this place were to get torched tomorrow, it wouldn’t bother me a bit because 99% of my focus is on the future. This stuff is all about the past. That said, it’s also fun to have all this stuff and remember the unique memories associated with them—the amazing adventures, the partners, the experiences had, and the vistas seen.” A quick glance at the small office’s cluttered walls and over-stuffed bookshelves, however, doesn’t do justice to what has become BD’s mini-museum and hall of fame. Solution? We grabbed a camera and asked Metcalf to explain the significance and stories behind a couple of the countless items in his office. Here is the result from that quick filming session, the first video in our new series, From The Corner Office.
