"Enantiodromia" was created as the primary project for my Basic Elements of Filmmaking class at the University of Wisconsin-Milwaukee in the fall of 2014. It was shot on 16mm reversal film and digitized later. The film is a loosely narrative visual conceptualization of a Jungian battle with the subconscious as represented by a malevolent shadow. Unfortunately, due to the state of the digitization equipment provided by the school, there was some quality lost in the digital transfer, such as a loss of sharp focus and blown-out whites. Starring: Eugene Lundin Written, Directed, Produced, Filmed, Edited by: Matisse van Rossum Special Thanks to: Joe Exner, Ben Sheetz Matisse van Rossum 2014

A film combining the mythology of the Hollywood/Spaghetti western, Tarot, magic, occult, Jungian psychology, and mysticism with flamboyant, multi-layered, supersaturated imagery. Multiple narratives conflict and adhere. Meanings emerge and contradict. Music and dialog tell another layered story, sometimes agreeing with the images, sometimes trying to subvert them. A film should be a container for the psychic unconscious energy of its creator. That is what this is. There is also a commercial.

“The dark side of the Self is the most dangerous thing of all, precisely because the Self is the greatest power in the psyche. It can cause people to 'spin' megalomanic or other delusionary fantasies that catch them up", so that the victim "thinks with mounting excitement that he has grasped the great cosmic riddles; he therefore loses all touch with human reality.”

Almost four years in the making, FINDING THE GOLD WITHIN - a feature-length documentary by Karina Epperlein - had its WORLD PREMIERE on October 3rd at the Mill Valley Film Festival! www.goldthefilm.com -- www.karinafilms.us -- facebook.com/goldthefilm -- twitter.com/goldthefilm Six young Black men from Akron, Ohio, enter college, determined to redefine society’s images and low expectations of them. Music, poetry, football, basketball, international relations, law studies, and the desire to change the world, are their guiding posts. Having attended the nationally acclaimed youth program Alchemy Inc for four to seven years, they are sitting solidly in themselves. Well trained in critical thinking and unusually articulate about their inner lives and struggles, the young men guide us through - and into - the stories that saved them or set them apart. In turns quiet, thoughtful and exuberant, they are navigating a complex set of changes: classrooms and teachers, new friends and racial provocations, fathers missed, remembered and reconnected with, summer jobs, and financial hardship.

PRAYER is an immersive multi-media experimental performance piece about prayer as a conduit of transformation. Built on a song cycle composed by SackJo22 (Susan Joseph), with Evie Ruth and Angela Grillo who collaborate as “The Reflective Collective”, PRAYER incorporates music, text, video, and gesture to reimagine the dream world from which themes and images were extracted for this work. Prayers for guidance, prayers for relief, and prayers of gratitude are presented through the characters of an ephemeral Chorus and Dorothy Vogel (inspired by famed art collector Dorothy Vogel) who create and hold a sanctified space for the audience to experience this unique exploration of prayer as art and art as prayer. Produced at Eclectic Company Theatre with Beth Ricketson as Dorothy, Susan Joseph as BLACK, Evie Ruth as WHITE and Haskel Joseph playing live acoustic guitar.
