Mid-winter in Tahoe was underwhelming indeed for the Janky crew - low snow totals and high pressure forced them to seek out spring-time activities, for example the Second Annual Nick Mota Invitational and the Castle Peak Jump Sessions. Just when they thought that winter had run its course, Mother Nature surprised them all with a cold system of storms that left over 6' of light powder over the Tahoe basin over a week. Everybody scrambled to ski as much powder as their legs and work schedules would allow, not wanting it to end. Enjoy as the crew seeks out new backcountry locations in South Lake Tahoe and pays homage to the freeskiing mecca that is Squaw Valley. Songs: Monster Rally - Sun Videos Big Spider's Back - Terminal Seat The Guess Who - These Eyes Vance Joy - Riptide (FlicFlac Remix) Riders: Anthony Santos, Peter Calhoun, Keenan Hawkins, Austin Hawkins, JP Schlick, Andrew Tarca, Josh A, Jacob Schwarz, Hazen Woolson, Timm Phillips, Eli Sobel

What a year in these parts! After one of the driest years on record and in midst of a drought...would my June turns even come to fruition? It has almost become a yearly ritual in my household...come mid-June, to climb and ski around the Carson Pass area off of Round Top Peak at 10,381 ft and then continue up and the down the chutes of all the Sisters Peaks (10,153 ft) down to Round Top Lake. The funny thing is that we actually found all the chutes not only to be skiable and holding glorious corn the entire day. Woods Lake (8,232 ft) is my usual starting point because its a quick 45 mins up to the snow line at Winnemucca Lake. However, this year THAT snow line was a couple hundred feet higher. The temperatures were fairly warm and probably in the 50's but due to a sustained 30-40mph wind, the snow stayed completely the same for the duration of the day. After a few days of boating and soaking up the sun on the shores of Lake Tahoe, we headed to the legendary Patch off HWY 88 to not only test the SUV but also to get some Father's Day fun in the snow. The kids made snowballs, my 5 year old took a few June laps, and dad got his carve on which ended up being a blast of a morning. Bottom line...Tahoe delivers in even the worst of years and for that I am stoked.

Its that time of year again in Northern California…hiking, snow skiing, boating & jet skiing! Unknown to what we would find on a back to back low snow year, the objective was clear…to climb and ski around the Carson Pass area off of Round Top Peak (Moon Crescent zone @ 10,381 ft), and to climb and ski as many lines as possible around the Sisters Peaks (10,153 ft) As it turned out, the conditions were extremely similar to what we found this time last year…minimal sun cups and perfect corn. We started our trip from Woods Lake (8,232 ft) and hiked up to the snow line at Winnemucca Lake. After a quick ski boot transition, it was time for crampons and slaying for the duration of the day. The snow was still firm on the first line down Moon Crescent, but was perfect corn on every subsequent descent. All in all, a 12 hour loop back to the car with a ton of vertical and every objective met = SUCCESS! Nothing better than recouping those tired legs than getting up early and railing some glassy turns on Lake Tahoe…followed by an afternoon session searching for jumps on the Sea Doo. http://www.gowestfoto.com The Winter of 2011 - 2012 was a remarkably dry one in terms of snowfall in the sierra. Storms in early March, however, did allow for some spring riding/skiing. Later that month, after high pressure set in and the snow consolidated, I set out to take some creative photos and video footage with two of my friends in the Carson Pass area. We were able to find a few aspects near Red Lake Peak that had just enough snow for us ski/ride. At one point my friend Chris lands on a rock, bruising his back. Fortunately, he ended up being ok. While none of the footage is that "extreme" here, I was still happy with the results. Most importantly, it was just a great day to hang out with friends in the Tahoe backcountry. Two of the photos in particular are among my favorite ski/snowboard shots I have taken. They can be viewed by clicking here: http://www.gowestfoto.com/#!portfolio , then clicking "Sports." For this shoot, we used a variety of cameras including the Canon 5D Mark II, the Canon Rebel T1i, and the GoPro 1 and 2. Remember to PLAY IN HD. Filmed by Tim Epner, Chris Kelly and David N. Braun. Edited by David N. Braun. Soundtrack created by David N. Braun using Apple Royalty Free Loops and Garage Band software. Go West Foto

It may be the last 'real' skiing in the Tahoe area as a byproduct of the less than stellar 11/12 season, but it may go down as some of the BEST corn skiing I have ever experienced. The trip started with an early Friday evening ascent and descent of the infamous Wall of Kirkwood. The utterly silky smooth snow heightened our expectations of the next two days off of Carson Pass. A couple inches from a late season storm last Monday may just have been our saving grace. The temps never got too hot but also never got too cold, thus providing perfect conditions to slay the corn. From the Moon Crescent zone to the perfect pitches down to Winnemucca Lake, it was a perfect last hurrah from a less than epic year. For the full write-up filled with pretty photos: http://www.slaythegnar.com/2012/06/corned-chaos-off-carson-pass-ca-061012/ Cheers
