On a crowded run, a carving snowboarder starts to wonder about what it would be like to have it all to himself. Shot on a helmet mounted Contour 1080P, modified for an external microphone, with the lapel/lavalier microphone clipped to clothing underneath my jacket. The core or 'pith' of Chinese Sumac is extremely soft. Soft enough to pick-out with a fingernail. A screwdriver also works and to go deep you can hand-turn a drill bit down through the stick. The wood is excellent for making hollow shapes but terrible in any case where you need strength in the middle, such as for the neck of a small human figure.

This small necklace bead was been carved from the stone of the fruit of a fruitwood tree. Material such as this, which is very hard and fine textured, is strong enough to hold the detail seen in this carving. In a softer material, this kind of detail would crumble and break or dent very easily.
